Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Football player arrested (updated)

He was a walk-on so he doesn't have a scholarship and we fought a war about 150 years to settle that issue of indentured servitude, we can't really force him to stay at Oregon State if he doesn't want to. he had already told Riley he was leaving, he didn't feel obligated to the rule of the team at that point. I don't know how to break the news, but unlike when we were chaste, studius students for which alcohol didn't touch our lips until we were 21; today a majority of underage students drink at college (maybe not at bob johns and byu, but everywhere else)). College experience is more than just studying to get a job (and sports for some), it's about growing up and some of that means kids experiment and push boundaries as the part of the process to figure out who they are.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Heisman talk

your question is so obvious, I wonder if you're serious, or just wanted to generate chat? Love affair with SEC (more than 1/3 of the country thinks every other conference is only 50% as good as the SEC....any success in the SEC is worth 2X anywhere else in the country). Alabama being in teh SEC and being on the national championship hunt gets 10-20X the press Stanford does. Some people think the Heisman is like an MVP trophy, it's not about whether you are better than another player, it's about did you help your team make it to the superbowl/world series, etc. Or at least that should be a heavy factor in the voting---you need to be really exceptional to not be on the best team to win MVP. lack of respect for PAC-10...just heard on ESPN tongiht (Bowl Preview show) again that the Pac-10 doesn't have good defenses as the big time programs (predicting Ohio state crushes Ucks, Oklahoma beats Stanford and Nebraska beats Arizona)....the people who have to set odds and make money see it a little differently, but they don't let bookies vote for the heismen do they?

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: De Carolis preview

whatever we want to say about economy, cost of tickets, etc., etc., etc. there are two cold hard facts: 1) many other teams are able to get more fans who pay as much or more money. 2) competiting at the top level of intercollegiate sports is very expensive so if, for whatever "valid" reason, we sell fewer tickets or have to lower prices to sell tickets we are at a competitive disadvantage in terms of money. In the long run money means being able to hire the best people and better facilities. Exceptions are sometimes pulled off, but in the long run programs with more money are more successful on the field i think beaver energy would be best spent not complaining that ticket prices are high or the AD is too down on fans, but instead getting behind the AD to figure out how we can increase our fan base. not everyone can afford basf and season tickets, but we can all get behind selling our team.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Pac-10 rankings

I think you are a little tough on Arizona. Iowa won 9 games last year was picked either third or forth in Big 11 this year (behind OSU and Penn St, equal with MSU), Iowa City is a tough place to win. Central Michigan one of Arizona's "lower level" wins is solid team returning 18 starters and is the overwhelming favorite to win the MAC this year. If you don't believe me, ask Michigan State. Granted Arizona traditionally has an inconsistent offense and loses Gronk only magnifies that problem, plusStoops is an easy coach to dislike...but there's a reason why the oddsmakers opened them as a 2.5 pt favorites this week..

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: More football notes (TV update)

I live in Texas, we had a Houston Astro game on instead of the Beavers on FSN last week. This week i can watch it because it's on Versus. I understand your frustration of not being able to watch the game. Fox is showing other PAC10 games this week....so we should just turn down other national TV outlets because you can't watch it. it's like no good deed goes unpunished, we've been incredibly fortunate that the Athletic office has arrange to have so many games televised recently, we now feel it's a right to watch all beaver games on TV. Versus is trying to make money so they can pay the teams like the beavers to televise their games...they charge carriers to pick up their network--they are not in the buisness of giving away things for free. they may not be espn, but their obviously carrying some events that some of their customers (like you) care a lot about. If enough customer like you tell them that unless they carry VS you'll switch providers, then they'll pickup Versus....if not enough people complain they won't. complaining to anyone else (OSU/PAC-10 and Cliff) is a waste of your time
