What a horrible thing to have happened! I am so sorry for your loss and the loss to your community.

I finally got my Reader to unsubscribe to some blogs: I got rid of ones that hadn't posted in 6 months and ones whose actual blogs I never visit. Then I added some! So much for that exercise.

I had myself all lined up to read When the Emperor was Divine today then saw someone post about a mystery and that got me in the mood so I am off to find a mystery book

You have hit on the things that I don't like about LA either: no city center (come on, NYC, SF and Boston have done it well, why couldn't LA?)

Does it matter if the book is set in the country or written by someone from that country? Here are two of my recent favorites, both are non-fiction and quick reads: Little Princes by Conor Grennan (Nepal) and Radio Shangri-La by Lisa Napoli (Bhutan).

I've been keeping a map of where I read this year so feel free to check it out if that helps, a bunch of my books are set outside the US: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&...

I wonder if the getting paid to write reviews will make "people" claim the reviews aren't fair and unbiased. Of course, most "professional" reviewers are paid, but somehow that may not translate. Cool idea!

I tried reading this one years ago and just couldn't get through it. It has always been in the back of my mind to try reading it again so thank you for the reminder!

As you know, I really liked this book. I agree with what you said about it: it explains the situation in Afghanistan well, without confusing the reader or taking away from the story.

I have been mulling over switching to Intense Debate or Disqus so am very interested in this post. I use blogger, with the pop up and the word verification. The one time I took off the word verification I got spammed. :-( I love the concept of individual replies that Intense Debate and Disqus provide, but I hear some people don't like having to log in...
