GazetteOnline.com : Your Arizona two deeps

See Adam Gettis back in the two-deeps (need to have him ready in case MacMillan struggles in his first road test). It's also interesting to see that Bernstine is still listed at CB, even though he has only seen action this season as SS.

GazetteOnline.com : The Last Call -- The long ball

Greatly appreciate the access to the participation report! As an out-of-state fan who watches the games on TV, it is hard to tell who is in the game at times. I did recall seeing both Gaglione (didn't know he was healthy enough to practice) and Furlong (a surprise given he wasn't invited to camp). The report also shows that Jake Riesen played (getting the mop up duty that Leppert would have otherwise received). Did Kirk mention anything about Gettis? It would be nice to have him healthy for Arizona in case MacMillan struggles.

Hi Marc - thanks for the updates! For those of us who live out of state and watched the game on TV, can you give out the second team defense on that last drive for EIU. The Big Ten Network camera angles made it hard to tell who was in there (unless the player made the tackle). Realize your busy with the postgame, but would greatly appreciate such a listing anytime this weekend - thanks again!

That was a great team - too bad they couldn't win the Rose Bowl. Whatever is said about Ronnie Harmon in that game, UCLA's offensive (their line and running back Eric Ball) just shredded Iowa's defense that day.

GazetteOnline.com : Wegher remains absent

Certainly won't be counting on Wegher this season. The reason again is none of our business. Hawks have to hope that Hampton and Robinson can stay healthy, and that a third option develops from one of the freshmen (Coker, assuming he can return from his injury in the next week, or Johnson). I will stick my stance that O'Meara's value to the Hawks is on special teams. If Paki's # of carries is greater than Morse after the EIU opening game, that is a bad sign for the Iowa rushing attack for 2010 in my opinion.

GazetteOnline.com : Wegher absent, status unclear (updated, not at Tuesday practice)

The reason Wegher is out is really none of my business, so I only hope it ends well for him. As for RB in the upcoming 2010 season, certainly have to hope that Hampton and Robinson can stay healthy (which has been an issue for both of them). Never seen Rogers, so don't know what to expect. As for Paki, hope his role stays with special-teams, which he has done quite well. They could also have Paki at RB on obvious passing downs to help pick up the blitz, but it won't be a good sign (IMO) if Paki's # of carries after the EIU opener is more than Brett Morse.

GazetteOnline.com : Quick thoughts on Jarrod Uthoff choosing Wisconsin

HIgh school kids can attend whatever college they want - I have no problem with that. In recent years, all top-notch Cedar Rapids area high school basketball recruits have chosen to attend other schools (Wisconsin has a CR pipeline). I have a feeling that this will likely continue next year when Marcus Paige makes his announcement. I think that Cedar Rapids media members (including you Mike) are starting to become sensitive about the perception that CR high school athletes will do just about anything to get out of signing with the Univ. of Iowa, since of the advertisers and subscriber to the Gazette are followers of Hawkeye sports (I'll bet more than 80% of your Internet traffic is Hawkeye-sports related). Given the high level of competition for Internet marketing dollars from Hawkeye sports fans (many sites to choose from), the perception of CR as being even remotely perceived as anti-Hawkeye could hinder the Gazette in this competition.

My list is certainly similar to most others: 10) 2004 Outback Bowl: Iowa 37, Florida 17 (rarity to pound Florida) 9) 2009: Iowa 15, MSU 13 (McNutt last second catch enough reason) 8) 2004: Iowa 33, Ohio State 7 (only Ferentz win vs. Bucks) 7) 2009: Iowa 21, PSU 10 (fabulous punt block by Clayborne) 6) 2002: Iowa 34, Michigan 9 (Hawks whip Wolverines in Ann Arbor) 5) 2002: Iowa 31, Purdue 28 (Banks to Clark 4th down TD) 4) 2008: Iowa 24, PSU 23 (Daniel Murray comes through with FG) 3) 2010 Orange Bowl: Iowa 24, Georgia Tech 14 (first major bowl win in 51 years) 2) 2004: Iowa 30, Wisconsin 7 (Hawks get share of Big Ten title) 1) 2005 Outback Bowl: Iowa 30, LSU 25 (no more needs to be said)

GazetteOnline.com : Summertime, and the living's not easy for Iowa football when two players get arrested

Jewel Hampton obviously made a mistake and will have to suffer the consequences (both in fines and a probable 1 game suspension). I have no problem with that. However, when Hampton was in Vito's, the bar was also breaking both the new Iowa City 21 and over ordinance (by having someone under 21 in the bar after 10pm) and Iowa state law (serving alcohol to a person under age 21). Where is the media coverage of this part of the story? It seems that the Iowa City bar owners have opted to ignore the new 21 + ordinance, and then claim the old Casablanca "shocked" defense when someone under 21 is arrested at their bar. If Vito's called the police to get Hampton out of there, they obviously weren't concerned that they would be punished for their actions (as noted above). I would bet that Vito's was engaging in the same actions the next night.

Not sure what to make about his punting videos, only because he gets as long as he wanted to get the punt off (something that doesn't happen in college football). Hopefully, he can get good distance on his kick-offs (where he does get to take his time) to win the job (as Murray was quite shaky on kick-offs last year).

One the assistant coaching front, the last thing Hawkeye basketball needs now is to hire assistant who have not had success recruiting major college talent. Just because someone played Big 10 basketball 15 years ago doesn't make them a good recruiter in today's environment. Certainly hope McCaffery doesn't waste an assistant spot on some unqualified ex-Hawkeye.

Colin Sandeman is in his 4th year, as he played sparingly as a true freshmen in 2007. I'm excited about the receiving corps this year (unusual for both of Iowa's starting receivers to have size). Hope that both Davis and Sandeman can have productive seasons. Of course, everything is predicated on the effectiveness of the offensive line.
