I just want to thank The Toast for being and to Mallory, Nicole and Nikki for all their hard work. The Toast started right after I moved to this country and it seems fitting that it is ending two weeks before I leave here.
That bit, "Despite her more liberal beliefs, she often towed a more conservative line while in office, mostly because she knew that doing so would avoid controversy and allow her to build public support for her agency and get the work done that she needed." really stuck out to me and in many ways is true of what women politicians still have to do today!
Seconding York! Take a tour of the York Minster, plus you can wander the charming streets, see pretty gardens, and visit a decent Viking museum.
Yeah the amount of trade between Ireland and the UK according to the Irish Times is 1.2 billion euros a week so the trade impact will definitely be felt by both countries. Do you know why remain campaign haven't focused on the specific relationship between Ireland and the UK which I feel is more concrete than this amorphous concept of Europe?
I mean I'm not sure that the Leave voters would care about the damage to Ireland but I'm surprised it hasn't been discussed at all. There's been a whole "phone a friend" campaign publicised here to encourage Irish people to call friends and family in the UK and encourage them to vote remain.
Is Claire progressive though?
Never doubt the Republican Chickenhawks ability to tear down a legit war hero. Just ask former Senator and triple amputee Max Cleland
Sending good wishes from Ireland. Ireland would really really like the UK to remain. On top of the whole misguided racism issues the UK leaving the EU could potentially screw over the Irish economy and complicate things with Northern Ireland which has been getting tons of coverage here but I haven't seen discussed at all in the UK.
