I've had The City of Mirrors staring at me from one of my bookshelves for months now, so I'm rereading The Passage (and am planning on rereading The Twelve after) so I'll actually have a single clue what the hell is going on.

(I kept trying to read books I haven't read -- including one that I have tried to read like four times now, oh my god, I don't know why but I cannot get into the fucking thing -- and just. Couldn't stay involved in any of them. No idea why.)

I agree with you about how emotive Shadow has been so far -- it makes sense that he'd need to change, because the medium is different and it's hard convey everything without a straight-up voiceover for what he's thinking, but ... eh. I don't know.

Both the things djinn87 said were good ideas, as is not going alone (oh my god, don't go alone, holy shit). The other thing I can think of, having done a semi-depressing amount of car-shopping in the last few years, is that if you can look around on various dealerships' websites near you to see what they're offering for approximately the same car, it can be really helpful -- my car is a Camry, and there are so many of them out there, and so many from each model year, that it was unexpectedly easy to go "okay this dealership has this car from this year with this many miles on it for this much, and that dealership has that car from the same year with about the same number of miles for three thousand more" or whatever.

Also, if you don't want to buy a car that day, don't. Ignore whatever the salesperson is telling you about ~special sales~ and ~we can hook you up but only today!~ because, especially if it's soon, it'll be the end of the month and the guys in the office are going to be pushing hard. Just tell them no, even if it's hard for you; mention it to your dad, and ask him to back you up.

Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire is an urban fantasy; the short summary of it is that it's about a half-fae private detective, and she's trying to solve a murder. (Fair warning: first book of a long but really awesome series.)

I read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay as a high school sophomore, and as much as I loved it -- desperately -- I didn't realize how much of the little things I didn't really get until I started getting more into comic book fandom in general. I will randomly come across a fact or something and literally go "... oh now that makes sense okay then". Sometimes I think about rereading it specifically for that (and also, you know, just in general, because: amazing), but I can never decide if I have the emotional energy to invest in it.

I voted~ (I didn't even get a sticker, ughhhh. Last time I voted it was absentee because I was out of state; I was so looking forward to getting a sticker.)

While I was filling out my ballot someone sat down next to me for, I swear, all of thirty seconds before standing back up and getting in the line to turn his own ballot in. Meanwhile I'm sitting there triple-checking mine to make sure I filled everything out correctly. Mleh.

I am so, so glad I am going to be working Tuesday night (I work 8:30pm - 7am) and so will only sporadically be able to check and see what's going on instead of voting and then just constantly refreshing the news without any ability to control what's happening. Ugh.
