Gilbert was a young fireman when he was injured in a motorcycle accident that put him out of work for several months. I remember that each of the men of his department stepped up to work his shift so he did not miss work or a pay check. For many years Gilbert volunteered to work holidays, and shifts for others to pay back the debt he felt he owed to the firemen on the line. Boulder has done well to advance Gilbert through the ranks. It’s been used experimentally. Yes, it has triple the energy per pound and it’s clean-burning, but it’s bulky. A gallon of diesel weighs 6 pounds. A gallon of LH weighs about 1/3 of a pound, so to get 6 pounds, you have to have 18 gallons. Heck, to get the same energy as one gallon of diesel, you have to have 6 gallons of LH. Add to that the fact that its a cryogenic liquid and requires high-pressure heavy steel tanks, and it’s a losing proposition quickly. Besides, LH is made from natural gas so it won’t solve the carbon footprint problem.
