KOMO - Seattle, WA : Contractor on brink of closure: Feds never paid | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Local

If Steling was a subcontractor, seems that the beef should be with the prime contractor. The prime contractor had to develop his own estimate for the roof in order to prepare his overall bid. If the specs for the roof got changed later, the usual process is for a change order. So either the prime negotiated a change order and got paid for it, or he may have been stuck with the problem if it was his own problem for underestimating. It's very unfortunate for Sterling to be in this predicament, but this probably needs to be figured out in court.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Fresno State's Pat Hill withdraws from UW head coach consideration | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington

UW administration will continue to bungle this mess. It should come as no surprise that all of the named or rumored candidates thus far have decided to stay where they are, go elsewhere, or tactfully "withdraw from consideration". They are no dummies. Only a dummy, and also a glutton for punishment, would agree to come here. The program will take 4-5 years to get back on track, but that won't happen because the administration will fire the person in a couple of years.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Parents outraged by plan to close Seattle schools | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | News

Proposals to change the way education is funded in this state might be fine for the future, but will not solve next year's $24 million shortfall. That's reality. It's interesting that parents will loudly protest when THEIR school is proposed for closure; parents whose schools are not on the list are mostly relieved. "Outraged parents" who are opposed to school closures and program reductions ought to present alternatives totalling $24 million. If they say it's the job of the school board to develop those, well, they have. I wonder what they would do if one of them lost their job and the family budget took a huge hit. Bet they'd figure out a way to live on less rather than just moan about it.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Bishops ask Gregoire to stop execution | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Local

I live on the North Olympic Peninsula and the media here has covered this case in great detail. While one occasionally hears of cases where there might be some evidence to suggest that someone other than the accused might have committed the crime, this case is clearly not one of those. Most folks around here have no doubt about who committed the crime. The only remaining issue is the severity of the punishment.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Huskies favored in battle of Pac-10 bottom feeders | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Sports

Best comment I've heard regarding this game. Seahawks should do the same for their final six games, but then they would probably win more via the coin toss than on the field and that would mess up their draft position. Heaven forbid!

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Reality check: Olympia braces for tough budget year | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Local

Given the size of the projected deficit, there is no way the state will cover the difference by reducing travel, saving energy, or deferring projects. These are "nickel and dime" things that might make up 5-10% of the shortfall. Salaries are by far the largest segment of the budget, so the only way is to layoff staff. That translates to cutting programs and services. There's no other way. Unfortunately, when municipalities find it necessary to lay off policemen, then it's hard to argue for things like the arts, parks, etc. Hang on to your hats! When we spend, spend, spend instead of saving some, then we have only ourselves to blame when times get tough.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Trickery helps Dolphins beat Seahawks, 21-19 | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Sports

Funny how there are so many headlines that refer to "trickery" in Miami's win today. If running a play that your opponent is not expecting equals trickery, then so be it. To me, that's smart football. Until a team can devise a stop against those plays, Miami will keep on tricking everybody and keep winning, too. And if I were Miami, I couldn't care less if anybody labels us with the word "trickery". As for the Seahawks performance today, we had our usual share of bungles, but at least there were some positives that were nonexistent for many weeks.

For some time now, I have considered myself very undecided between Burner and Reichert. If anything, a very slight lean towards Burner. Even the Harvard economics degree issue wasn't a huge deal for me. Politicians frequently "bend the truth" to their advantage. However, her persistence and arrogance that she has displayed over the past few days have made me switch to Reichert. I'm glad I didn't vote early. For her to get her panties in a knot and to dig in her heels over this issue tells me that she does not have the intelligence and sound judgment to represent me. I suppose she thinks it is to her advantage to keep this issue on the front burner, rather than to just move on to more important issues. Doesn't work for me.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Viewers tell Ken: Stop picking on Palin | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | News

Blaming Ken is just shooting the messenger. Can't argue with the facts. Latest is that her hair dresser is being paid more than McCain's foreign policy adviser. Not to worry -- latest polls today show that her approval rating is now below 50%, with women showing the largest decline. I could care less about how much is spent on her clothes and hairdos, but it does call into question the issue of priorities. With just a few days left, there isn't enough time left for McCain to win voters with convincing positions on issues that are important to most Americans. McCain's current "strategy" (he never really had one) is: Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Donate to charity?? Sounds good, but here are several questions. First, If you want to bring Obama's, Biden's and McCain's suits into the debate, do you think the guys suits are also going to charity? Second, any charity recipient caught wearing those clothes will be arrested for shoplifting. This "donate to charity" response is just another quick and not well thought out comment typical of McCain's crew, just like their decision to select SP in the first place.
