They are quite 'assertive' and as a result pay attention. It wasn't bad - it was just that the drivers were more assertive. Seattle seemed wimpy in comparison. Last year I went to Manila in the Philippines (imageine an area the size of metro Seattle - with 18+ Million people in it - crowded). There the traffic laws seem to be more 'suggestions' - people drive very 'creatively'. They cut into traffic and cut each other off all the time - no yelling or anger, people just accept it and move on. And you hardly hear of a traffic accident. I suspect that was because people have to pay a lot more attention.
