Which reminds me that I am so sick of the Nice Guys of fandom over-identifying with Bolin in this episode and throwing all sorts of verbal abuse at Korra for daring to not love him back here. Bolin is way too good of a guy for that, anyway.

(Not saying anyone here is doing that, it's just... not uncommon in fandom, alas.)

And now that I think about it more, I do like the use of humor in this episode because it allows me to not take the romantic melodrama too seriously (though I do love everyone involved and have my own shipping preferences).

(which, while not especially nice and something he needed to be called out for - and was - is understandable considering pro-bending is his livelihood and if he and Bolin can't make it in the tournament, they're back on the street)

Thank you for reminding me about this. Mako may be abrasive, but there's enough at stake for him and Bolin that I think his focus, at least, is justified. Not saying he shouldn't apologize when in the wrong, of course (but one of my favorite things about him is that he does), just that it's a natural extension of his characterization.

FWIW, I love Mako, too. I have A Thing for the older brother archetype. Plus there's something about his characterization that feels almost feminine to me (hence all of the Mama Mako depictions in fandom!)

Like, the fact that he bought Bolin his favorite dumplings? melt. Mako's a huge dork and I love him for it.
