i have a strange story followed by a question so bear with me... yesterday my father was pulled over for having snow covering his license plate. apparently rendering it unreadable to the police officer behind him. after explaining the situation in detail the officer told us that the unabomber was caught because his license plate was covered and for all he knew, i could be a bank robber. to which i replied that i was a special ed teacher. when the officer returned to his patrol car my dad went out and cleaned off the plate. according to him it was hardly covered. when the officer returned my dad told him that the plate wasn't nearly as 'unreadable' as the officer had let on and that he would've probably fought it had he been given a ticket. he told him that it was really harassment for him to pull us over unnecessarily because of the potential of us being the 'unabomber' or 'bank robbers'. although somewhat tense, the conversation actually was pretty low-key and given my dad's dry sense of humor we actually all exchanged some laughs (yes that includes the officer). as the conversation ended the officer told us to have a good day and my dad jokingly said thanks for the harassment. clearly the officer didn't find this last jab funny and said, 'wait, give me your license and registration again because you're being an asshole!' as my dad fumbled for the registration again the officer said 'and if you don't find your registration, i'll give you a ticket for that.' he left with the license and registration but quickly returned and said 'let's forget this ever happened' and explained to us that he wasn't trying to harass us and was just trying to do his job... clearly i've tried to give a breakdown of the story as briefly as possible so as not to bore all of you that have read thus far. i do give the cop credit for swallowing his pride and stepping up to to the plate to attempt to apologize for his clear lack of professionalism. but my question is this: why do cops pull us over... is it really just to snoop around in hopes of catching us drunk or stoned or running from the law? why do they even bother giving us a story about a light out or a plate covered or whatever other bs they come up with? why don't they just say they are just stopping people randomly to see who they are and what they're up to? because if that's really what they're doing then it is harassment.
