KOMO - Seattle, WA : Co-pilot of crashed Coast Guard chopper faces homicide charges | Local & Regional | Seattle News, We

That's what I was thinking too. Potentially considering the aircraft commander at fault for the incident as well. Sad all around...Never a good thing when fellow Coasties pass away, and definitely not good when it was due to something completely preventable.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Judge orders release of Ref. 71 petition names | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, B

Harassment is indeed illegal...But what the legal definition of harassment is and what really IS harassment to an 80 year old grandmother are completely different things... and professional lobbyists KNOW that. Propoganda mail and door to door folks are annoying to me... but I'm a middle age white guy with former military service and I'm not tiny... I don't get intimidated very easily; however, I know there are a lot of other folks out there that could be intimidated by "legal" tactics. But as you said, per the letter of the law as it is currently written, I agree, these names must be released. However, I wish the folks fighting it would have petitioned to change the privacy laws on it rather than fight a lawsuit against something that's currently pretty clear.

And my own ignorance of the current law that all previous have been public record is on me...I disagree with that for the reasons I stated in my other post. I think a bipartisan commission should validate names, but no need for public release...voter registration can be culled over on the actual vote. I'm conservative yet I tend to favor the idea of legalizing MJ and prostitution, then regulate and tax the hell out of it. Most that know me, know my views and I'm ok to stand up for it in public. Not everyone is so outspoken nor confrontational. It's not hard to intimidate a meek person even if they are passionate about an issue. And in those examples, what about the person subject to random urinalysis (such as myself) and their employer saw they signed that measure...conveniently, "random" testing becomes more frequent.... That's fine, I'll pass every time, but it's damn annoying to have to have someone watch you take a leak cause you signed a petition.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Judge orders release of Ref. 71 petition names | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, B

Correct. There's no problem in seeing that a person is a registered voter. In fact, it's nice to have that cross check that we don't have dead people, felons, etc. voting. However, WHO/WHAT you vote for is and always should be secret to prevent intimidation/meddling. Now that this precedent is set, any big lobby interest (on either side depending on if it's a "conservative" or "liberal" issue) can go on a propoganda war on folks who sign an initiative. Can you imagine an elderly person wanting the harassment of extra spam mail or even worse, people coming by their door jehovah witness style and trying to change their mind???? WAY too stressful and it WILL affect peoples decisions to even sign a petition for referendum in the first place. Why do we need to know the names? Worst case, an issue gets on the ballot that maybe didn't have enough signatures.. yes, that costs money, but it's the cost of doing business. If the majority doesn't like the issue, the issue will lose on the ballot. By releasing the names and the implications of future harassment, it will make it VERY VERY hard for some legitimate issues to make it on the ballot in the first place. :(

Concur.. at the very least signatory folks will likely be getting "information" in the mail....Absolutely no productive reason that the names should be made public on any referendum petition... it's essentially the same as knowing what a person's vote is on an election, and we damn well hopefully are keeping those secret still.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : McGinn: Lower speed limits needed to save cyclists\' lives | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weathe

Just another revenue generator at the end of the day. They can drop the speed limit to 20mph in town all they want to, but the reality is that very few folks would drop down that low (hell I'd have to ride the brakes on my car to keep it at 20... it pretty much goes that fast just off idle.) so the revenue collectors, err, I mean police would just sit back and write tickets all day long.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Teen driver fined $42 for crash that killed Kirkland bicyclist | Local & Regional | Seattle News, We

That's where the lawyers come in... prove that he had "disregard for safety". The article indicates that he had difficulty negotiating a turn and lost control and hit the bicyclist. Without knowing further details as to his speed, weather and road conditions, etc. you and I can't really determine what RCW is applicable or not. And assuming that he wasn't speeding recklessly in a wet night time environment, it appears that the officer/prosecuter didn't feel there was a strong enough amount of evidence to back a more severe charge of reckless driving, let alone vehicular homicide. The article also indicates that the LAWYER says the police didn't check cell records...who knows.. I'm sure he's reviewed the official police report, maybe not.. I sure haven't so I can't say for sure that they didn't rule out that issue.

Good luck if he uses Sprint... they only maintain 12 day records for texts (calls would still be logged). Prosecutors working on a case my wife and I were witnesses for ran into that issue with sprint. Hope the family can come to some peace and resolution rather than just make an ambulance chaser a bit richer. :(

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Charge: Softball coach molested teen girls | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Break

Our family has been around various summer and select teams and not one single team we were involved in was a non family member of the opposite sex allowed to spend time in a hotel room alone with an athlete. Hell, as posted below, alone time with any athlete, regardless of sex, just does not happen in a reputable program. Yes, select teams to become close like a family; however, even then, there are lines that they do not cross in order to remain a reputable, ethical team.

So what.. he's a father figure... *I* am a father figure for my stepdaughter and other children and I sure as hell do not hang out naked around any of them, nor touch them. Father figure/role models are VERY good for our children. They help them develop and mature into good upstanding citizens. What it's reported that this guy has done is just pure scumbag pedophile that lured vulnerable children into a bad situation. I can't believe any program would allow a male adult to share a hotel room with a female athlete. All the programs/select teams our daughter played on always had female chaperones for everything. It should have set off HUGE red flags to these girls parents or even other parents on the team. I know it would have for us!

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Motorcyclist injured in crash with Ride the Ducks vehicle | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather

Wowser! Hopefully the rider is ok! Would be very nice if this accident got half the coverage as when some doofus on a bike blasting down I5 on wheel gives the rest of us riders a bad name. From what little is presented in the story it sounds like the Duck driver was either too close to the bike at the intersection and could no longer see him then blasted the gas when it turned green, or just flat out wasn't paying attention. Either way, should deserve a citation of some sort or another.

I don't know from personal experience, but from what my friends that are stationed down in CA tell me, yes, it is nearly impossible for someone not connected with a law enforcement job to get a concealed carry permit in CA. And even some involved in LE (Coast Guard boarding officers in my friends case) it is also still very difficult. But this legislation prevents carry in the car as well.... so how the hell am I supposed to take my firearm to the range to maintain proficiency? Hunting and shooting events (which I'm sure will be poorly defined so most things will not be included) are exempt... but what about when it's off season and I want to go to the range to sight in my rifle.. or maintain proficiency... it's not hunting season, so would I be breaking the law?? Soooooo very glad I don't live down there and moving back to the midwest this month. My home state (OK) bans open carry, but it's fairly easy to get a concealed permit. Like many of the midwest/southern states, they have a "shall issue" policy (they have to issue it if you don't have convictions to prevent and have attended basic weapon training) versus the west coast and NE policy of do not issue if possible.

While I fully endorse buying American where it can, there comes a point when I'd rather the government spend money wisely. Up until very very recently, "American made" cars have had inferior quality and inferior gas mileage which makes them cost MUCH more than their foreign counterparts when you look at the entire life cycle costs. That said, it seems in recent years, the American manufacturers have realized that they have to step up a bit and they are making much better vehicles. But as said by JFR, many are assembled out of the US anyway.

many daycare charge by the week, so a partial still requires full payment. Adding an additional partial at the first of the year would mean an additional week out of the parents pocket. The only way it would balance out is if the year ended right at the week cutoff.... And as others have said, parents plan their work/vacation/daycare time around the published annual school schedule. When Kent went on strike year before last, it totally hosed up the winter vacations. For those of us who are not originally from here, it pretty much screwed up any plans that we had to visit relatives out of state because the make up days shortened the breaks by over half the original time.... I don't know about you, but when I have to pay to fly a family of 6 back to the midwest, I want to get the most days with family per dollar spent... when the breaks get cut down to only a 4 day weekend, I just can't justify that cost. So on top of monetary losses required to take off work or scramble to find daycare (my time is worth money too!), there are also emotional/stress losses involved to, all on top of the horrible lesson it teaches a generation that already has such a huge entitlement mentality as it is.
