Big Government : California's Delta Smelt is Raising Your Food Prices

This is why I feel so little compassion for California. Don't talk to me about bailing out a state who is still more worried about little fish, frogs, whales, or vegetation than it is taking care of its people and its fiscal health. I am not opposed to taking care of the environment, but I am opposed to NOT taking care of your people or your state budget. I understand there is about to be a massive increase in the cost of food. It surprises me that no one has figured out that they can make more money by turning the water back on and raising crops. The smelt contribute nothing.

Big Government : Saturday Open Thread: Madison Edition

Okay, the interviews have changed over the past week, but my understanding is the issue is not mostly the increased payments for pensions and health care, but rather the fact that the union would no longer be able to collectively bargain their compensation. I think they realized the national cameras were on them and suddenly got reasonable about the money so they didn't look selfish. I am afraid this is just the beginning of months of unrest in this country. Bless Gov. Walker, he cannot fold. This is going to happen in many states, and if he gives in this country is economically lost.

I hope you are right. I think it will be a volatile situation and I worry for the next Kenneth Gladney.

Its about time. And if they cant get him on this, perhaps, like Al Capone, they can get him on something else. There's plenty there to investigate I suspect.

Big Government : Have We Found the Anti-Obama?

I prefer to leave the damning of others to hell up to God. He is more than capable of dealing with folks, and thank goodness I don't have to be responsible for determining where one spends eternity based on what I see, and not what is in someone's heart. Lets just say, the guy is not winning the hearts and minds of America anymore, and leave it at that.

Big Government : Shock Audio: Facing 'Obligations' From Leadership, Democrat Congresswoman Leaves Voicemail for Lobby

Its good this is out. And I hope the next few weeks are really nasty and revealing so we can get all the corrupt and pompous out of Congress, regardless of party. I am so tired of lofty, above the law, politicians. I am ready for a fleet of real people who will apply common sense to our problems.

Big Hollywood : The 'Twilight' Phenomenon: The Kids Are All Right

I read an article about a university (can't remember which one, but probably you could google it) whose psychology department studied the characters and found them all to be mentally unstable in one or more ways. Personally, I have never "gotten" the vampire thing. Even setting that aside, the first 2 movies were more self generated teenage angst than I could stand. The 3rd movie was better, but I think it was more that these kids have learned a bit more about acting, their characters are beginning to fill in a bit, and the whole mortal enemies working together thing was a good hook. I tried to read the books and found I just couldn't get through one. I have 2 daughters, one loved the whole saga until Ms. Myers decided to quash Midnight Son. The other is Edward obsessed. These books let me bring up subjects with them that are not always easy for them to talk about. How do these characters relate to each other? to their "authority" figures? Why is Bella so dependent on Edward? Why does she choose Edward and not Jacob? Are there other, better ways to communicate? How do you know you are in love? And does love mean you leave everything you have held dear or should you expect that its not an either/or choice? I don't like the stories, but they did spark some interesting discussion. And I could cheerfully never see Bella and Edward again and it would be okay. Let's not talk about Jacob. My mantra there is "I am old enough to be his mother. I am old enough to be his mother." !!!

Big Hollywood : Hollywood Rorschach: Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen & the Child Rapist

I have never understood our need to paint an actor as a moral authority, a political authority, knowledgeable about scientific data, etc. What all three of these men have done is deplorable. Period. Yet, Mel Gibson is an extraordinary actor, Robert Downey, Jr (mentioned by some others here) has really perfected his craft as well. Though I have no use whatsoever for Roman Polanski, I still would listen to Charlie Sheen read the phone book. However, I do not expect them to be perfect specimens of humanity just because they can act. If you want to punish their bad behavior and poor choices, vote with your wallet. When the legal system is not involved (I'm sure going to jail was a pivotal event for RDJ.) then the best way for a society to make a point about behavior is to not reward it. So don't watch Two and Half Men. Don't purchase Mel's movies. I don't know what would do it for the Swiss -- boycott their cheese? Their clocks? LOL. It occurs to me that I haven't heard anyone asking Jack Nicholson to renounce Roman Polanski, and Roman's misdeeds took place in Jack's house.! Why would Jodie even get involved in this? Jodie Foster has no worries about ever working again, whether she speaks up one way or another about Mel's situation. First of all, she's made enough money she doesn't HAVE to work. Second, she's one of the most talented and sought after actresses in Hollywood. And third, she's got a degree, and she can do anything she wants if she decided Hollywood was just too hypocritical and turned her back on it. Frankly I think that is far more likely than that her career will be damaged by something Mel Gibson did.

Big Government : Executive Temperament in Evidence: Chris Christie

Its good that I have an understanding husband. I find that there are several men that I just flat out love from afar; Bill Whittle (hands down the sexiest brain in America), Charles Krauthammer (quite possibly the most intelligent political commentator of my lifetime), and Chris Christie joins the list. The man has more common sense in his little finger than the entire current administration. That, along with plain speaking and honest assessment of our fiscal and international situations, would make him the perfect opponent for President Obama. You have the Intellectual vs. The Working Man (yeah, he's a lawyer, but he's got the NJ Blue Collar aura). The Polished-Say Nothing Politician vs. The Plainspoken-Straightforward- Here's the plan Executive. Talk about leaving your "politics as usual" behind! This man has such potential.
