Big Hollywood : Polanski, NAMBLA and Checking Our Moral Compass

I cannot help but be strongly disturbed by the rationalizations from those who have too quickly engaged in moral relativism, diminishing the potency of right and wrong. There is good and evil in this world and the BANALITY OF EVIL remains just as frightening, if not more so due to its passivity. Thank you for introducing this thread, expanding upon the already powerful message to maintain the moral compass of our culture. I found it very informative and helpful in reminding us that, we, as individuals, must hold fast to the notion of good vs. evil, right vs. wrong and learn better to see the difference. There is no excuse when one commits a wrongful act or associates with a person or group engaging in a wrongful act. Regardless of the situation, we are all responsible for our community and its well being. Even if we lose our moral compass, we still have the stars at night to guide us home. Hopefully, it won't come to that.

Big Hollywood : Confessions of a Letterman Intern

Yikes! I don't see any reference to the piece so let's not waste time or take this out of context. (My father is a good man. Please don't be disrespectful.) The point is to walk a mile in a man's moccasins before you judge him and Letterman's shoes are dirty. He faced a moral and ethical challenge and failed. Whatever the consequences are, he can't cheat his way out of it. Notice I asked a question for clarity and offered an opinion as to a presumed answer. A hypothesis which, obviously, upset you very much. And to be honest, I'd like to offer opinions respectfully and not be lectured at either.

Shock and Awe, my friend! The redundancy, however, could nauseate the senses. I'll just mention it once and add no further to the pain and shock you are suffering. I figure that's Moore's department. He's made a career of it.

Very well said!! "What would you prefer? Lives or Wallets?" I'd love to hear Moore's take on that one---which would most likely be to avoid the matter entirely.

The irony is the NYT affirmed its reputation by breaking the 1912 story about the RMS TITANIC sinking. Maybe back then it was a bounty to all mankind, but now, it's not so much.

John Nolte put is best when he talked about why Moore was someone you DON'T was batting for your team.... His work offers a pin-hole perspective on issues far more complex than he deigns to acknowledge. Yeah, Hannity could have pushed his buttons a bit harder, but to what end? Has anyone been able to get the man to admit that an alternate view may warrant consideration? Specifically, get him to engage in a constructive debate as opposed to a glorified soap box? The whole dynamic of God and Religion is in the same realm as Propaganda. When it comes to Left and Right partisan culture, these are taboo subjects unless the goal is provocation. In my experience, it is NOT okay for a conservative to invoke God or Religion, nor is it okay to engage in "Right Wing" Propaganda. Moore is a liberal champion. Consequently, different rules apply to him. Talking about God and 'making millions' off his "Left Wing" Propaganda is perfectly acceptable, if not laudable. Looking forward to the BH Commentary and thank you for all the great coverage.

Andrew, I don't know what's better, the verbal cuckoldry on the official blogs or the verbal cuckoldry here, in response to your piece! I am shocked, shocked, to read how those other two guys got their panties in a bunch. You'd think they'd be grateful to have something else to talk about. The question is, can they talk about anything else? The only way we find out is if you keep up the machismo and we'll watch the rally with ardent joy as it continues. Keep 'em sweatin, AB!

Great article, wonderful clarity, many thanks. Piracy and theft go hand in hand. There is nothing glorifying about it, unless you want to make up a story with Peter Pan and Captain Hook. Note: The story would suck if the premise was Pan suing Hook for kidnapping Wendy, John and Michael.

Really great point and WHY doesn't he put it on the free market? Hasn't he done that before? But a great idea to give it to PBS in order to help that organization raise money for Public Broadcasting. Too bad, he's too much of a hypocrite.

Thank you for your piece, Mr. Nolte. I have a question about your concluding paragraph, if you all don't mind. When you say that his documentaries fail to ultimately persuade or make a tangible difference on the issues, why does SICKO not hold relevance to what we see with people's reaction to our current Health Care Crisis? My concern is that his work is deceptively persuasive. I am not a fan but I admit his work remains a curious subject. Plato's caveat about the nature of art in politics and society is, in essence, that sometimes people are not educated well enough to take figurative references as anything but literal. More simply put, Stupid People take his work too literally and his satire as truth. Will his latest documentary have an affect on pop culture, enough to influence what happens in 2012? If so, how? If not, why?

[ falls off chair ] They have the Darwin Awards for a reason, ya know? Oh my goodness.... Michael Moore's gots kids? I wonder if he home schools them himself? Can you imagine! At least, we have to swallow the pill and acknowledge there could be a second generation of documentaries in 20 years. They shall inherit Michael Moore's Kingdom. Too bad Shakespeare isn't around for comment.

Wow. Good read, yes. Why is it that this stuff gets scarier every day? I'm young. I admit the veracity of youth has a downside to it, but honestly, I have more faith in my generation. Just this stuff gets scarier and scarier with all this 'hope' and 'change' bringing back 'more of the same' in a very unsettling way.....

BIG FRAKIN BOWL OF LIB INSULT! Anyone recall German propaganda machine in the 1930s will see immediately what kind of absolutely arrogant and venal idea this is. Just the mere thought of the application to sponsor only ONE side of the partisan debate is not just egregious but horrifying. In the 21st century we ought to have learned our lesson -- or at least, the administration ought to consider the slippery slope upon which they now walk. How DARE they!?? Artists will create regardless and this direct assault--and I choose the word carefully--is more than wrong, more than noxious: Insulting to any artist and to any audience! This maligns the very virtue of bi-partisan propoganda. It is hubris. It will beget nemesis. And if they try to censor the OTHER SIDES of the debate? Hell hath no fury.
