They learn from the death of other bears? It's not like they gather socially, and say "hey, you know Bob was shot over the weekend, you might want to stay out of that area."

Where in the article does it say the cyclist ignored the stop sign? It's implied, but until the investigation is complete, it's an assumption he didn't stop.

KATU - Portland, OR : Cyclists report more tacks in roads, flat tires | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Portland News, Sport

If I hit you while on my bike, my homeowners insurance takes care of it. Believe it or not, it is VERY difficult for a cyclist to hit a car (usually it's the other way around) Cyclists are much more nimble, and can avoid cars easily. Car registration takes care of the green line (once again, most cyclists own cars too, sometimes multiple cars... you know that right?) What's stopping you (and others) from cycling, and avoiding paying for all of this? If cyclists are saving so much money, and getting all these great perks why not join them? I suspect it's not about saving money as getting from point A to point B in the easiest manner they see fit. Who is Mayor Richard Simmons? Is this intended to be a gay slur?

Most cyclists have a car as well, and pay all the required fees that go with it. Cars and bikes are not mutually exclusive. You know that right?

I have Armadillos on my road bike. Not 100%, but I go over glass and other hazards without a flat... Though I cringe when I do. There is also Gator (or alligator) and other "tough shell tires" for road bikes. The problem is that it adds some weight which many cyclists are trying to avoid.

If they use the one I saw in Chicago, it seems to work. You create an account, then register using a credit card. Sign in at the auto bike kiosk, ride away, and the charges and clock start ticking. Return to any kiosk, and they charge your card for the time you were gone. If you steal the bike, charges just keep going up. I think the bikes have RFID in them to know when they are returned. http://www.bcycle.com/

KATU - Portland, OR : Extreme coupon cutters save cash, teach their ways | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weath

I have a coupon for $3 off $10 worth of produce. Many cereals also have coupons for money off fresh fruit. At Safeway here, they are running 2 lbs of organic strawberries for $5. After Qs, I get 4 lbs for $7. We also have dried pasta (stable) for ~$.39/lb. With Qs, we got FREE organic tomato paste (to use over the winter when our garden tomatoes are not in yet). Driscolls has a $.55/1 off berries, stacked with another $.55/1... you get a $1.10 off organic berries! Currently Safeway is running buy any cereal + Seattle's Best Coffee, get $3 off your next order. We have Q's that bring the price to $2.13... and we get $3 OYNO... we're being PAID to buy stuff we use anyway! (we're getting Cheerios.) That overage goes to buy cheaper fruit. And for the argument about "time is worth money" we clip Qs while watching TV/listening to the ballgame on the radio. It's not like we're exclusively using time to clip Qs. We also trade Qs with our neighbors to maximize time. We buy healthy food, and save ~60-90%. Using these strategies, we saved enough for a train trip (sleeper) for two from San Jose to Chicago for 10 days after about 9 months.

KATU - Portland, OR : TV chef\'s pressure prompts LA schools to ban flavored milk | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traf

A response to Jamie's request on Eating Well. The author believes he's barking up the wrong tree: http://www.eatingwell.com/blogs/food_news/_jamie-... Some highlights: Why should low-fat, low-added-sugar chocolate milk stay in school cafeterias? For starters, we’ve learned from our research that: • Children who drink milk at lunch are the only ones who come close to meeting their daily calcium recommendations. • Compared to kids who drink plain milk, children who drink flavored milk consume more milk overall (both unflavored and flavored) and fewer soft drinks and sweetened fruit drinks. They also get more calcium, vitamin D and potassium (three nutrients many kids don’t get enough of). Plus, they get all these benefits without consuming more total added sugars than kids who just drink unflavored milk. • There is no difference in the BMI (Body Mass Index) of children who drink flavored milk compared with plain milk or nonmilk drinkers.

How is shooting it killing it immediately? Bears can take multiple rounds, and still charge you to tear your head off. If it got there, it can get out. Leave it alone, it'll get hungry enough to find a way out of a predicament it got itself into. What's the harm in waiting?
