GazetteOnline.com : Iowa seniors: Hello, goodbye to realignment

Differences in academic calendars already have an impact. Ohio State, for example, doesn't start its Autumn 2010 term until Sept. 22. The Buckeyes get to focus exclusively on football for several weeks longer than most teams.

Unfortunately, there wasn't a title game in 2002. It should have been Iowa (8-0) vs. Ohio State (8-0).

If the Fiesta had chosen Iowa first, the Orange could have chosen TCU. If it had chosen one of the other teams you listed, then the Fiesta could have chosen TCU with its second choice.

How can Junker say TCU "was a selection that we had to make with first selection"? TCU was guaranteed a BCS spot, so it wasn't going to get left out, but the Fiesta Bowl wasn't forced to select TCU with its first (or second) selection. "We thought it incumbent on us to make sure we made the best match-up of available teams possible," Junker said. So the Fiesta Bowl felt that selecting fourth-rated and undefeated TCU first would give it the best match-up. Fine. But don't say you "had to" select TCU.

I was there, too, Mike. Bewildered at the time, the crowd chanted at Heathcote mercilessly thoughout the first half while wondering aloud whether his bizarre gameplan would continue the second half. Yet, it was so fun to be there, as it was one of those "we'll probably never witness this again" events.

In 1980 Michigan State had only one stud player, Jay Vincent, and Jud Heathcote felt that Vincent couldn't go all out for 40 minutes - foul trouble, fatigue - so he essntially reduced it to a 20-minute game (that, as you noted, went five extra minutes due to overtime). Iowa led 8-2 late in the first half before the Spartans scored the final two baskets before halftime.

The criticism of WHO-TV isn't regarding Todd Lickliter, the coach - it's regarding John Lickliter, the player. And it's Gary Barta who asked for the apology, not Coach Lickliter. If you wish to criticize Coach Lickliter's recruiting, fine, but that's not what this issue is about; rather, it's about whether such a "satire" of a player who has done nothing wrong was inappropriate.

1. 6 - Yes, Iowa leapfrogged Northwestern last year, but it was because Iowa puts lots of rumps in seats. Both Iowa and Penn State will send plenty of fans to the Fiesta Bowl, so Iowa should get the nod based on its head-to-head win. Still, Orlando for New Year's Day isn't bad. 2. I just want Iowa to win. 3. Every Iowa football game excites me. 4. Yes, but only if I can get an affordable flight that allows me to arrive early enough for the other bowl game. I would enjoy watching any Big Ten football team play.

As you noted, Marc, the Captial One Bowl participants will be revealed on Sunday afternoon.
Wichita State was put on probation sometime afterward because some of its players were receiving illegal benefits. I recall this joke, which wasn't so funny after Iowa's loss: Q: Why didn't Wichita State's stars leave early to go to the NBA?
GazetteOnline.com : Iowa among 20 under BCS consideration

"No conference may place more than two teams in the BCS games, unless the conference has two teams in the National Championship Game, and neither team is its champion." Okay, so Iowa, Ohio State, and...who shall I pick?...Michigan State don't play each other and all three go undefeated. (Because Ohio State's rivalry games are Michigan and Penn State, only one of those three can go undefeated in any given year.) Ohio State is ranked #1 and Michigan State is ranked #2 in the BCS standings, so they're in the National Championship Game. But Iowa, based on the Big Ten's tiebreaker, is the conference's official champion and, as such, gets an automatic BCS berth.

GazetteOnline.com : Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma Saturday and it's in the Fiesta Bowl ... or so it's reported

Yes, TCU has to go somewhere. If the Fiesta picks Iowa with its first selection, to what extent does it risk having no choice but to take TCU as its second selection? Or, to turn it around, how likely is the Fiesta to take 10-2 Oklahoma State with its first pick to ensure that it gets the Big 12 team it desires, given that it may be forced to take TCU with its second pick? And if TCU loses and Boise State wins out, simply replace the Horned Frogs with the Broncos above.

GazetteOnline.com : Mid-day questions for you

If Iowa had beaten Northwestern, maybe it doesn't lose to Ohio State - especially if the NU loss was primarily due to Stanzi's injury. Northwestern was better in Nov., but Iowa's loss is still disappointing (not discouraging) because the Hawks are stuck with, "What if Stanzi were healthy?" I prefer the Fiesta - Iowa hasn't played in it yet and my wife has family in the Phoenix area - but I don't object to the Orange or Sugar. If Iowa is in the Fiesta, Iowa State in the Insight is intriguing. Would Iowans attend both? I would. But it would be hard to pass up Oklahoma. OU may be reeling, but ISU can't claim a victory over the Sooners. I'll let Ferentz explain the reasons for Iowa's numerous close games. While some are good, they don't provide opportunities for reserves to get experience (and for starters to rest). From a fan's stanpoint, it's been one of the most exciting seasons ever. Yes, I'll attend Iowa's bowl. I've attended 340 Iowa football games and wouldn't miss it. I'll watch the Iowa men's basketball game vs. Texas.
