Race Relations Project : South Park...off the hook?

I think that south park is completely “off the hook”. I have never liked this show. It is completely offensive and ridiculous. All of my friends love to watch this show so I figured I would just give it a chance. However, by the end of the episode I was completely outraged and bothered. They made rude and offensive comments towards women, different races and religions. I think that this show should not even be allowed to be aired. I understand that some people may think it is funny, but they should really think about the people they are offending when they make those comments.

Race Relations Project : What about people who can only "afford hard work"?

I completely understand why immigrants come to our country illegally. It is expensive and a long process that most people do not enjoy doing. However, I think there should be a time limit. If an immigrant comes to the United States and still has not become an official citizen after six months then will have to be sent back. We can not support all of the illegal immigrants living in our country. But I think we should at least give them a chance to make it happen. They can get a job raise some money and apply for the process.

I think that this is a very tough question to answer. Personally, I think it all depends on the individual. Sometimes you have immigrant who are working their butts off just to support themselves and their families. While on the other hand, you have immigrant who just do not care to become a citizen. I feel that everyone has the right to come to the United States no matter what his or her economic status is. We should not discriminate people, rather encourage them to get jobs and become citizens. I feel that there should be some sort of rewards system for the immigrants who come to this country and work really hard. Most of time, they are working in jobs that we would never even think to work for. These are jobs that get paid little because they do not really need a lot of experience or an educational background. But they are still working long, tiring hours just to make ends meet. I think that these immigrants are more deserving to be here legally then the bums on the streets. We should be kicking the people who live on the streets on sell drugs out of country. They do nothing for our country and just create chaos. It is not fair that the immigrants do not have enough money to become a legal United States citizen but are still working extremely hard. I am not sure what type of policy they could enforce but I think that they should look at each case individually. If an immigrant is working hard to make a good life for themselves then I think they should be allowed to stay. However, if an immigrant comes to the United States and is completely worthless and has made no attempts to become a citizen then they can be sent back. It is not fair for them to be living in our country and receiving all of the benefits as the other citizens. I have heard that the legalization process if very long and intense so I can completely understand why immigrants would chose to just live here illegally. This is such a complicated issue but I think that if someone really wants to live here and make a good life for themselves then our government should not kick them out. They should work with them so they can become legalized citizens. However, I do not think it fair if they live here for so many years and do not have to pay taxes and health care and all the other amenities that come along with being a United States citizen. If they are going to live here they need to help support our country.

Race Relations Project : Women

I think that all women are beautiful and unique in their own way. Their appearance may play a big part on what they look like but the true beauty is really inside. I know that is really corny to say but I find it to be very true. I think beauty comes from within. Although, I know a lot of girls who try and cover up their personalities by dressing and creating an image that is not them. They are dressing for society. I know a lot of girls that have small boobs are always trying to make their boobs look bigger. They buy push up bras that have extra padding so it can create that certain “look”. While on the other hand, most girls that do have big boobs are usually trying to cover them up and make them look smaller. They always have trouble finding certain clothes and bathing suits to fit them. This is just a never-ending cycle that will probably never end with women. We always want what we can’t get. It is very bothering to know that men and society are so obsessed with our images and the way we look. We must always be presentable for society and keeping up with the latest trends in order to be considered “beautiful”. I think the whole concept of boobs is out of control. The size of a woman’s breasts should not matter. We should not be judged by other guys because are breasts are too small or too big. How would guys feel if we could tell the size of their penis just by looking at them? Do you think they would feel a little self-conscious? What if their penis was a size A (the smallest size it could possibly be) would women still find that guy desirable? It’s much easier for men to sit there and criticize e women for their appearance because they can hide anything they want about their body behind baggy clothes. I thought that the play that was performed in class was amazing. It completely revered the situation around and made it look completely ridiculous. Which is absolutely true, this whole obsession with big boobs is ridiculous. Boobs are simply just extra fat that is placed on our bodies. Guys apparently don’t like it when our fat goes to any other parts of our bodies, but when they go to the chest reason it is completely acceptable? I wish our society could stop caring so much about people’s appearances and start to look at the person under that. If you really get to know people and their personalities you will find that person to be beautiful too. Women are not all just about boobs, buts and curvy hips. We are normal human beings like everyone else in this world. We were given certain womanly characteristics and traits that make us who we are.

Race Relations Project : Christian Invaders - the turnaround

I understand exactly what Sam is saying. I could see myself thinking differently if I lived in Iraq and the United States was invading my land. I would not be able to just sit back and watch my land and life get completely ruined by people from a different country. I would probably join the insurgency and fight to defend my land and my family. However, I do not think that the Christians want to take over the world. Even though Christianity is one of the biggest religions in the world there are also so many other different religions. I do not think that all Christians are working together to take over the world.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

WOW! I am in complete shock and almost even speechless. This is completely outrageous. This type of game should NEVER be allowed to even be created. What type of sick person even thought to create a game like this? Do men really find it fun to sexually grope and rape women and think it is okay just because it’s a video game? If they think it is okay to play this game then they will subconsciously think that it is okay to act like this in real life. The Japanese government really needs to do something about this. What on earth is our world coming to?

Race Relations Project : What might be the second step?

I think that the second step should be creating awareness. If we really want this terrible cycle to end then we need to inform people that the products they are buying are produced by slaves. I feel like if more people were aware of this then they would not be so open to buying these types of products. Sam said that people need to get a “feeling” in order to make a difference. Well I definitely got the “feeling” after watching this video. We need to get other people to get that same feeling and then maybe some changed will start to happen.

Race Relations Project : The White Minorities

After read this article, I do not really feel concerned that white people will soon become the minority. I honestly think it will take an extremely long time in order for that to happen, must longer then the year 2050. But I do think that it will happen eventually. There are so many different immigrants migrating to the United States at such a rapid pace. I am studying to be an elementary school teacher and I have observed and taught in a number of different classrooms and it is amazing to see the amount of diversity there is within the classroom. A lot of times I ended up being the minority in the classroom and sometimes even the school. I never once felt uncomfortable or out of place. I think that this is just a way of life and we need to start embracing it because that is where our country is heading.

Race Relations Project : Those Dolls Say Alot About Who We Are

The point Sam made in class about Disney was very thought provoking. I had always thought that Disney did such a good job incorporating the different races into their movies. They have Jasmie, Pocohontas, Mulan and many others. I thought they were incorporating a variety of different races. However, when Sam said that they all still have the same features as a white person except their skin color and half color was just a little different, that was very eye opening. I had never even noticed this before. But if you think about it normal people of those races look nothing like that, so why would they make them look like something they are not?

Race Relations Project : Those Dolls Say Alot About Who We Are

I thought that this video clip was very disturbing. At first Sam warned the class but I really did not think it would be that bad. It was truly amazing to see how other people view things. After hearing all the different responses from the children the overall consensus was that the white doll was good and the black doll was bad. It was truly eye opening to see how even the children of colored favored the white doll over the black doll. It is very sad to think that these children have to look in the mirror and think that they are not good enough. They are considered the “bad doll”. What makes them think that way? It boggles my mind that even at such a young age these children are already forming these ideas and thoughts in their head about race and society. It should not be like this, children should be out playing with their dolls and not worrying about which one is nicer looking or prettier looking. I think that a lot of this has to do with the media and society. When kids are growing up they tend to watch a lot of TV. They probably see all the commercials and ad’s with white models and white families all over them. There really are not many advertisements with people of color on them. The media has portrayed such a terrible image of what beauty really is and it is destroying our world. It is impacting young children all the way to adults. Children should not be faced with this type of pressure at such a young age. They need to realize that they are truly beautiful and not listen to what the media tells them. The “beauty” that they see on TV is fake and typically unattainable. Half the time, these models and celebrities are airbrushed and photo shopped completely. People do not really look like that in real life and the media should not be trying to promote that type of beauty to such young children. I guess this issue never really affected me growing up because I always had white dolls. I never really preferred any of the black dolls but I think that is because they did not look like me. I always tried to get my dolls to look like me and dress like me. So why would I pick a doll that had a different skin color then me? However, it is really sad to see that even the little black girls are not choosing dolls that look like them. They are choosing dolls based off of what the media and society have told them is acceptable. This is such a terrible issue that really needs to stop.

Race Relations Project : If men could menstruate...

First of all, I think that tampons should be free for ALL women not just if men somehow magically got their periods. It’s not fair that we have to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars each year for a natural occurrence that happens to all women. They should at least lower the prices of them. But back to your question, I think that every guy has a different background education on periods. Some are educated on this issue and some are not. I think that more men should be educated about it so then they would not be so grossed out every time a women brings up the topic.

Race Relations Project : What are all of you thinking about Asians?

Personally, I have a very hard time distinguishing between the different Asians. I know that there are Asian Americans and Asians. I think that we should talk about them more often. Sometimes, the class is just so focused on white and black that we often forget about the other types of minorities that exist in the United States. I know that Sam is pretty much referring to them when he says “brown” but I think he is mainly talking about blacks. There is a large Asian population in this world and even at Penn State. I think that we should be more educated on Asians.

Race Relations Project : In Her Own Words

I understand pretty much everything that Sam Richards was talking about in his lecture about periods. He was making some good points, however I do not believe that it was the time or place to talk about periods in such depth and detail. Personally, I feel that periods are a private issue that girls usually talk about with close friends or family. It’s not something that you openly talk about to a group of 700 college students. For example, would Sam talk about having sex with his wife in front of 700 college students? I know he talked about having sex with her two times in one day and that was already too much information for me to handle. I just do not think it was Sam’s place to give out so much information about his wife’s period. It would have been different is Laurie came into class and told us about it. I would never be okay with my husband talking about my period to a group of random people. I thought that it was really interesting when Sam talked about how this is a “mans world”. That is exactly right. This world was created by men and is mostly run by men. They do not understand anything that goes on with women. They all just assume that when a girl gets moody and cranky they are on their periods. They will never be able to empathize with the pain and misery that women have to endure each month. I think it is socially acceptable to talk about periods “generally”. When I say “generally” I mean talk about why periods happen, the symptoms that come with having your period and other things along that matter. However, talking about how a period blood is a work of art in the toilet, is a little to detailed and even a women does not want to hear that. I think that is why men get so grossed out when girls start talking about their periods because they think blood and that repulses them. They need to understand the different aspects of a period and I think that is socially acceptable to talk about. I really think that men should actually be educated on this subject matter because they really do not know anything about. Maybe if they understood why we get our periods then maybe they would not be so turned away when girls try to talk about it. Overall, I thought Sam brought up some good points in class and I do feel that we should be able to talk about our periods freely. However, I do not think we need to go into detail about each girl’s period. It is just a common understanding that NO period is a good period.

Race Relations Project : Does this rudeness thing cut both ways?

I think that the rudeness does cut both ways. If you think about it, when Same posts a question to all the white people in the room there are always some racist comments in there. And when he posts a comment to all the black people in the room, there are a lot racists comments. I think that this is because the majority of the class is white! The white people in the room clearly outnumber the black people so obviously there are going to be more racist comments coming from the white people. I think that if the room were filled with more black people then there would be just as many racist comments.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. In the beginning I was breezing through the chapters and thinking to myself, “this is stupid, I get it already.” I did not really see the whole meaning behind the book. Finally, it started to click in me and I was finally getting it. All of the different examples Laurie gave really made me think about things differently. White people are not the only prejudice people in this world. There are so many other races that are just as racist as whites are too. I think I get the whole point of the book, however I don’t think I will actually “get it” until I am put into a real life situation on my own.

Race Relations Project : I Reckon She Can Hit

I think that this is a wonderful story. When I first read the caption of this video, I was a little of unsure of the situation. I did not know how a woman could possible be a good match for this type of rough and intense sport. However, after watching the video I came out with a completely different perspective. This young girl defeated all the odds and surpassed all of the different stereotypes and truly followed her heart. I have always thought that there are no women who play football because it is too much of a rough sport for any woman to handle. However, this woman has proved differently. I was completely unaware that there were even any woman football leagues out there until she mentioned that she played for the Divas team. I think that Natalie Randolph is completely qualified to teach football. However, I was a little confused as to who she would be teaching to. The video did not mention if she was teaching girls or boys. I would assume that it is a boy’s team because it is a high school football team. I would like to hear from some of her players to see how they view their new coach. I do not understand why football has to be only guys? Women can have the same skills as many guys do and I know a lot of girls who like football more then some guys. So what is the big deal? Women and men should have equal opportunities in everything even when it comes to sports. I believe that someone who has enough experience and the right qualities can achieve anything. Obviously Natalie Randolph has a lot of experience in football and I’m sure that she will do a great job as head coach at the high school. I hope that she will not get a lot of criticism from the players, teachers or media because she is doing nothing wrong. She is simply following her passion in a sport and taking it into a career. In the video she did appear very quiet and humble, however I am sure she is a completely different person on the field. When you think of your typical football coach, he is usually very stern, hard and sometimes cocky. Natalie seems to be the complete opposite. She appears to have a good head on her shoulders and ready to take on this challenge. She seems extremely confident in her abilities to coach the team. I really wish I could attend one of her games and see her in action. I really do wish the best for Natalie and hopefully this will open up a whole new window of opportunities for women and football.

Race Relations Project : Fired for a Scarf

This just gives me another reason to hate Hollister and Abercrombie and Fitch so much. This store is so fake and only hire certain people based on their looks. After hearing this poor girls story, makes me even more frustrated. How can they fire her for wearing something that goes along with her religion? I really wish more people knew this about Hollister and Abercrombie and Fitch so they could stop supporting them. If they are going to discriminate against certain types of people, why should we support them? You would think that a highly established company like this would have more values and morals then this.

Race Relations Project : Prom or No Prom: Just Don't Let the Queer Students Dance Together

This is completely outrageous. I feel very bad for this girl. There was no need for the school to cancel the whole prom and ruin it for the rest of the grade. Prom is such a huge deal in high school and most people look forward to this night for a long time. They should be allowed to take whomever they want. The school should not be allowed to tell the students that they cannot bring a person of the same sex as their date. We are in the year 2010; you would think that things would start to change by now. What if she just wanted to bring a friend that was a girl, would that be allowed?

Race Relations Project : Are Whites the Only People Willing to Humiliate Themselves?

The Bachelor and Bachelorette is probably one of my favorite shows. Now I know it is very corny and cheesy but for some reason I always get so consumed in this show. It really just amazes me the way the girls and guys act and the things they will do in order to find what they call “true love”. I am actually pretty infatuated with watching reality TV and seeing how people behave and interact when in certain situations. Through the years of watching the show, The Bachelor, I have notice that there are rarely any minorities on this show. There has never been a black or brown bachelor or bachelorette ever on this show. Then I began to wonder if the network, ABC was a diverse network. Considering the shows that appear on this station, I concluded that it is mainly a “white” station. You rarely see any blacks or browns on this network, let alone a whole TV show with blacks or browns. I really do believe that the bachelor and bachelorette should offer more diverse people on their shows. They would get a lot more viewings, considering that more black and brown people would start to watch the show too. The whole concept of this show is to find your one true love. All of the bachelors come into the show saying that they are open to dating anyone and most of the time they end up with people that they never thought that would end up dating. So why not offer more diversity if these bachelors don’t even know what they are looking for? Typically, when there is a black or brown girl or boy on the show, they are eliminated within the first two rounds. It always makes me mad when this happens because they do not even give them a chance. They automatically eliminate them because they know they do not want to date someone of color. Which makes me think that most black or brown people do not sign up for a show like this unless they were attracted to people of a different skin color then them. If you think about it, most people do not outwardly put themselves in situations where they are the minority. For example, I could say that I would probably never sign up for the show “Flava of Love” or “The Love of Ray J” because I am not attracted to that type, nor would I want to put myself in a situation where I would be the minority. It is just a continuous cycle that will probably never end. There will always be some predominantly white shows and some predominantly black or brown shows. I think it all depends on the person’s personality and interests and if their interests pertain to shows like The Bachelor, then they should go on The Bachelor. Or if they pertain to shows like Flava of Love, then they should be allowed to go on that show, no matter their race.
