<description>A fine piece that says a lot that needed saying. One small thing: in his 5/18/97 &amp;quot;On Language&amp;quot; column, Safire credited the &amp;quot;effete corps&amp;quot; line to Pat Buchanan. Since he readily took credit for the &amp;quot;nattering nabobs&amp;quot; line, there&amp;#039;s no reason to disbelieve him on this one. </description>
