What you want, as an infantryman is STOPPING POWER,-you hit the guy-anywhere, including the arms-he goes down, he dosen't keep coming at you with five bullets in him. The old 7.62 NATO round: big slug, big charge, high muzzle velocity. It also provides the other requirement - range - with almost undiminished stopping power. You want to, where poSsible knock the blighters down before they get close to you. Another point is that lighter calibre infantry weapons tend to be used on fully automatic, which tends the user towards "spray and pray". which wastes amunition and leads to poor marxmanship- so much so that firers have been reported firing a full magazine at close range without hitting the target. Larger calibre weapons tend to be used semi autmatic, with aimed shots at the target. In my view NO BRAINER 7.62 every time.
