I had to fight through a powerful wave of second-hand embarrassment to get through the movie. I dunno, there's something about one party knowing something that the other does not and they try to explain things and set them up in the way they should be but the other party just can't understand and they interpret things wrong despite how much they try to get them to learn and

That's not to say that I didn't like it. Great movie, go watch it three more times. But somehow this was a gut punch to my anxiety and it definitely knocked the wind out of me for a while.

I interpreted the Doctor's actions at the very end to be a bit more tragic. It's not that he doesn't want to regenerate, but rather he doesn't want to live anymore. He thought he could protect Bill, redeem Missy, and give the people on that ship a bit more time to live. He couldn't. Pearl suffered and became a Cyberman, Missy couldn't escape her past and was literally destroyed by it, and sooner or later the Cybermen will catch up to the humans.

It's been a long time since we've seen the Doctor struggle and fail this much, and after so many lifetimes of struggle and failure, of having to fend off evil while knowing in his heart that evil will just catch right back up, the Doctor has decided that he's done.Being nice just might not be enough if he has to do this over and over again for every new evil that pops up in the universe. At this point, the Doctor is ready to let himself die.

So naturally, the Tardis brings the Doctor to the only person who can pull him out of this despair: himself.

Expanding on that point a little. Not too long ago, the mere thought of the Diamonds being present was enough to send Lapis into a panic. But when push came to shove and Lapis had to stand her ground (something Garnet was able to predict with her Future Vision) she did it without much hesitation and held herself together during the entire battle.

As someone with anxiety as well, this felt really relatable.

This is one of the episodes where the eleven minute run-time works against its favor. I did appreciate that there was a whole bunch of beef that had to be sorted out between Steven and Bismuth, but it just felt a little fast to me? Personally, I think it should have taken a bit longer for her to decide 'I'm okay with this.' but from a production standpoint their hands might have been a little tied.

You know, I think if I tried hard enough, I could find moments in this whole arc that can click perfectly with every word of "Total Eclipse Of The Heart." Consider this verse from the perspective of Ruby and Sapphire:

(Turn around)
Every now and then
I get a little bit restless
And I dream of something wild

(Turn around)
Every now and then
I get a little bit helpless
And I'm lying like a child in your arms

(Turn around)
Every now and then
I get a little bit angry
And I know I've got to get out and cry

(Turn around)
Every now and then
I get a little bit terrified
But then I see the look in your eyes

(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then
I fall apart
Turn around, bright eyes
Every now and then
I fall apart

Okay, something neat about the title. It's a quote from "Total Eclipse of the Heart." And if you skim the rest of the song, some the lyrics turn out to be very fitting. Especially this stuff from the second verse, if you apply it to Rose and Steven.

(Turn around)
Every now and then
I know you'll never be the boy
You always wanted to be

(Turn around)
But every now and then
I know you'll always be the only boy
Who wanted me the way that I am

(Turn around)
Every now and then
I know there's no one in the universe
As magical and wondrous as you

(Turn around)
Every now and then
I know there's nothing any better
There's nothing that I just wouldn't do

Now we're starting to understand the real tragedy of Pink Diamond. She was so narrow minded in her ideals and beliefs that she didn't truly understand how her actions would influence those around her. Sure, her intentions might have come from a just place, but that ambition to make Earth into her sanctuary was all she cared about. Any adverse side-effects or long-term consequences were never considered.

Ultimately, this gets my thumbs up. I recognize all the flaws this movie and the rest of the Abrams trilogy has, but it holds sentimental value for being the first Star Trek anything I've ever consumed. Maybe that's why I'm a bit more forgiving of it than others.

Yeah, admittedly, I think I got a little hyped up on myself there. Until I have the time to sit down and actually consume POI, I don't think I can effectively make any perfect judgements on what should be happening.

That said, my general thesis still stands: in order to prevent instances of fridging, make the character's final actions matter as much as what happens after.
