Ezra Becker ran 35:28 in the men B race at XC club nats after pacing "casually" the 1h25 group at the berkley half, then finishing 2nd to Varner at quad dipsea a week later, then running a strong 8h10 at north face last week... Talk about strong legs and fast recovery :)

I guess 2h34 on a 300D+ marathon course 1 month after diagonale des fous isn't slow...

Despite a titled that suggested teenage vampire love stories, it was a great read! Awesome job man!

since there are 3 divisions does this mean a veteran is someone who has run hardrock more than twice? If not I'm not sure I understand what an "everyone else" is.
The more you have run the race, the more chances you get to run it again?

Great report and good that the race gets the recognition it deserves from the US runners. Just another "toughest foot race in the world" after hardrock, badwater, and others.
I think you mixed up Mafate and Salazie cirques (the "across Mafate I ran, happy..." to "out of Mafate" at the col de la fourche is actually before entering Mafate and through the salazie cirque). Honest mixup considering the route was changed a few days before the race. It usually goes out of cilaos into mafate through col du taibit, but due to a landslide the race was rerouted out of cilaos through the "bloc" into the primary forest and into Salazie, then Salazie to mafate.
Hope to see you back!

yes Ludo was 2nd in 2009 or 2010 (the year Chorier won). He's a low key runner/skimo with a couple top spots at big races like templiers, maxi race, etc. a top 20 at UTMB too if i'm not mistaken.
More surprising is Aurelien Collet who is right now coming back on Ludovic. I don't think Aurelien had ever ran such a long race (he had done well at a few 100+k races including 8th at CCC last year though). The guy leaves near Paris (at least used to) which tells you quite a bit about his training mountains :)
I raced him once last year at a 14k fun race last year... well, he ran that in 20' less than i did :)

Schlarb was 5th at Maido but hasn't showed up yet at the next aid station (where a 5th runner already has). D'Haene is killing the race as expected.

That time of the year already! Feels like your top 3 men will be the podium, the women is more open (though Nathalie is a beast).

I agree to some extend with what Geoff writes here... The fact is, however, europeans are more successful at iconic US races than US runners are at european races, DESPITE the unbalanced focus: UTMB is a good example of a strong US contingent, quite focused on the race: AK, Foote, Shlarb are admittedly preparing this one ahead. Tim is somehow special as his biggest focus was HR. On the other hand, the european are not coming in full force to US races and still do good. Yes, no european besides Kilian has won WS, but who really tried? Besides Miguel Heras whose wheels came off... but he did good at TNF EC50, so did Francois. Same thing for Leadville: who besides Lorblanchet (who won that) really came from europe hungry for Leadville?
Another factor clearly is the density of runners in europe, between spain, france and italy. The adjustment to travels, as well as to the very different media exposure that hits the US runners when they land in europe, is something that is also bigger than what they are used to, and can be overwhelming. Finally, the pressure the guys are putting upon themselves to perform, could somehow inhibit their ability to actually perform...
