The Germans wouldn't understand, because they are the primary beneficiaries of the EU and, particularly, the Euro.

The Edinburgh Festival fringe started out as a low budget low brow alternative to the main festival with its high art and high prices, but soon eclipsed it and became the main attraction for the overwhelming majority of attendees.

Not sure why this article about the Conservative Party conference fringe made me think of that.

It wasn't an unnecessary referendum. Cameron was facing losses of huge numbers of voters to UKIP. Without the referendum promise, the election would have been lost.

MPs certainly deserve a proper holiday. They should get 25 days plus the public holidays, like most of the employees whose taxes pay the MPs' salaries. There is plenty of work for them to do the rest of the time, mostly repealing previous unwise legislation and slimming down the tax code.

A mass membership party is entirely possible if:
- the party's MPs do in Parliament what they promised at selection and election time
- the party has policies which are genuinely conservative and are in the traditions of the party
- membership brings with it some privileges, in addition to regular nagging for more money or unrewarded volunteering
- the party leadership treat the members with respect rather than referring to the Turnip Taleban

The last vote lasted for 43 years. But you agreed with it, so that's ok.

Rather, the division is between those who work in the public sector or large private companies dependent on Brussels money, and the rest of us with private sector jobs who have more of a "can do", enterprising attitude.

We will be able to reduce VAT on whatever products and services we like. Currently minimum VAT levels are set EU wide.
