As rad as it would be for this solution to come from WA, I seriously think the solution proposed by this guy from Florida is way better:http://cnn.com/video/?/video/us/2010/05/07/dnt.oi... It's a sugar-cane based powder that repels water and absorbs the oil, then bacteria (he says they've been proven safe) consume the oil and turn the whole mess into dirt. How cool is that? Minimal if any clean-up.

Agreed! Not only that, but the kid's reaction is going to be conditioned by his dad's reaction. If his dad had reacted positively, making it a big deal about how it showed that they'd even looked at his picture, then the kid could have come away feeling really good about it.

No kidding! Have they driven I-405 lately? Not THAT many folks actually carpool and those that do RARELY have more than 2 people. Doing this will actually reduce the incentive to carpool and increase the number of single-occupancy vehicles overall. I know I'd be thinking, "What's the point now? Jim and I are the only ones who live close enough together to carpool, and the hassle of coordinating for two of us isn't worth it if it isn't going to change my commute."

Well, he's right. They got off crazy easy. Layoff the "missionary hater/idiot" talk. I'm a follower of Christ myself and am terribly embarrassed by them. What these folks did is illegal, no matter their motive. If they'd done it legally (ie. went through the organization in their denomination that already exists to do this sort of thing the *right* way) then there wouldn't be an issue.

Awesome! Hopefully this will be the case for them as well. I think the risk is when you get the money by chance and not by working for it. If you work for it then you've got some deeper personal investment in the resources and you're less likely to blow it all.

Here's hoping that they beat the odds (and history) and don't let this unexpected massive influx of cash ruin them. :/ As awesome as it may seem to get this kind of money, such things have a pretty solid track record of destroying lives and relationships. If I were them, I'd only keep enough to get myself out of debt, pay for my kids' way through college and set myself up for retirement through various funds that aren't easily liquidated. Everything else I'd give away to a single charity. If you keep liquid money on that scale around it becomes too tempting for family members, friends and total strangers to ask you for hand-outs or sue you for no reason other than to get their hands on your money.
