And, ironically, I'm recovering from an intense fling in Pucon, Chile myself. This is a great piece! The weird mop things give me the creeps - that kind of sweeping is just not for me. Great info, Laura! I am big on this too. I just rented an apartment in Buenos Aires for a month and have houseswapped (arranged via craigslist). It's amazing how differetn the experience can become and how much money you can save.

I see your point Dharbecke but...eh. Kids under 16 could just give a crap about how paper feels. They'll be grownups eventually, with these preferences in place. I have always remembered when, in about 1992 (i'm old), somebody told me that business communication was going to shift to email and away from letters and faxes. I remember thinking that this person was just plain crazy, not even imagining that fifteen years later we would have a Blackberry-sized computer. That's how I think about things like this - I can't imagine the technology which might come along and completely change how books are read. I agree that Ebooks may not be what is going to turn the tide...but something will. It has to. It's what the next generation will want, whether we like it or not. Of course I'll still be in the second-hand stores looking for print because I'll have no idea how to actually work the gadget.
