Matador Pulse : The Battle for Pascua Lama

It's worth noting that protestbarrick.net did get back to me today with a few names of people who would have been great to follow up with. It's killing me that I'm no longer in Chile. I would love to have visited these people and gotten some more scoop. Let me know if you're in Chile and want to take on that task...

And, ironically, I'm recovering from an intense fling in Pucon, Chile myself. This is a great piece! The weird mop things give me the creeps - that kind of sweeping is just not for me. I'll be sure to let you know how things go when you actually reunite with the hot fling a few months later - I'm going to give it a go in May.

Brave New Traveler : At Home in New Places: An Interview With Pauline Frommer

I see your point Dharbecke but...eh. Kids under 16 could just give a crap about how paper feels. They'll be grownups eventually, with these preferences in place. I have always remembered when, in about 1992 (i'm old), somebody told me that business communication was going to shift to email and away from letters and faxes. I remember thinking that this person was just plain crazy, not even imagining that fifteen years later we would have a Blackberry-sized computer. That's how I think about things like this - I can't imagine the technology which might come along and completely change how books are read. I agree that Ebooks may not be what is going to turn the tide...but something will. It has to. It's what the next generation will want, whether we like it or not. Of course I'll still be in the second-hand stores looking for print because I'll have no idea how to actually work the gadget.

Matador Life : Tasting Place

"This includes eating it from a distance—I remember finding Chinese Five Spice in an American grocery store and nearly gnawing away at the cap to get to the delirious smells of star anise and allspice" I know what you mean! My friend and I once went to a Thai supermarket in Los Angeles and spent so much time shopping that they thought we were thieves...we left with more Kaffir Leaves than TEN people could use in a calendar year :) Wandering down a food aisle can take you back to a place and time, like a song.
