It's a different cinematic approach for a different type of film. The shaky hand-held was a stylistic choice for those movies and wouldn't work as well in this situation. It has little to do with being an independent film.

Actually if you watch the Gladiator 3-disc edition, they were reworking parts of the script the whole time they were shooting. Russell Crowe even complains on the DVD that films shouldn't be made by committees. It sounds like the same thing might be happening here.

Gran Torino, seriously? I was entertained, but beyond Eastwood being perfect for his role, the script needed another rewrite and a recasting. The movie was hit and miss; it lacks the polish of some of the others on the list.
