You normally get that error when you are, for example, using a PC normally, but JB'd your iPhone on a Mac. This is due to the different formatting options between Mac and PC, not anything to do with dev-team or Geohot. Do the process via PC if you use a PC, or Mac if you use a Mac.

This has been repeated many times. Google it, or search .ipsw using the belt in search function of your PC or Mac.

Are you sure ultrasn0w installed correctly? You have to give more info for people to help you. What device are you using? What steps have you taken so far? Pwnage or Redsn0w, which version of Redsn0w, which .ipsw, Cydia or Icy?

There is, as yet, no manual unlock (and it is unlikely there will be one). Ultrasn0w can only be installed through Cydia and Icy, over a wifi connection.

You will most likely need to add a new source in Cydia when it is released anyway, so you won't find it like that.

I think they are pretty confident the 3GS can be jailbroken, because it uses the same baseband. But the tolls released this weekend won't know how to speak to a 3GS, so they won't work, and you may end up with a brick.
