Daily Camera.com: : CU students, out-of-state hiker rescued Saturday - Boulder Daily Camera

Given the current trends of narcissism and self-importance, I found this story very funny and somewhat encouraging. First, look at the ages: Males that were between 18-19. Why do people expect that at these ages, these college students should have the cognitive ability and experience of those who have experimented, taken risks, made stupid, insane drug-induced decisions decades before these young men and still lived to tell the story and who have lived productive and rational lives? Second, 8 young men told the truth. These days, we're so used to being lied to, we forget to notice those who know what it means to be congruent with their words and with their actions.

D3343, I agree with you. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that they need to be thorough in their examination in order to charge the driver with the most appropriate offense.

Let's stick to the story at hand. Based on the DC article, the cyclists only "sin" was riding their bike on the shoulder of the road. It did not say that they were riding three abreast or that they were in the driving lane. They had a legal right to be on the shoulder of North Foothill. Period. One can argue and debate how safe that is. The fact of the matter is that it is statistically extremely safe. In this case, it became unsafe when the driver lost control of their car, crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into the three cyclists. Someone iike "Pennypacker" chooses to focus on what "freakin' idiots" the cyclists are for exercising their legal rights. Stunning. My guess is that if Pennypacker and I sat down and had a chat, he/she might admit to being engaged in some kind of activity that could be considered risky, like crossing Broadway mid-day or breathing. Pennypacker and any other human being that takes risks in their lives (as we all must do unless we choose to become agoraphobics) should not be pointing the finger at the victims. I cycle on a regular basis. I rode North Foothills/36 once and will never ride it again. I made a decision that was best for myself. It indeed felt "crazy" to share a road with cars that were going 65-70 mph. However, I reserve the right for others to do whatever they want to do as long as it is legal and not putting others in harm or danger. I will not ride with other cyclists because I feel like I'm taking enough risk sharing the road with cars as it is and I don't want to increase my risk by riding with others who always seem to want to be in some kind of conversation which I find irresponsible. I'll go for a hike with a friend if I want to talk. But clearly there are many who disagree with me and I often see large groups of cyclists riding together and it is their right to do so. As a cyclist, I accept responsibility for my choices. Every time I get on my bike and take to the road I understand that I might not be coming back in one piece. That may sound morbid but it's the process I go through before I get on the bike because I know I can't control the completely narcissistic texting driver or inebriated driver or just plain distracted driver who might just slide into my lane. I understand and accept that if that happens, I will find myself engaged in a battle I'm quite sure to lose. There seems to be more to this story than the driver was just trying to pass a driver who was turning right. Based on the limited details of this accident, it's still shocking that the driver was not ticketed. Clearly he went over into the oncoming lane and hit three people who were riding on the shoulder. I mean, really. Last Halloween, people got ticketed for running naked with a pumpkin on their head on a cold Halloween midnight hour but not this driver who crossed lanes and slammed into three human beings, one of whom is in critical condition? It's a mad mad world.

I wasn't being PC when I used the word "biker". I was cycling. Sorry to disappoint. Bottom line, this doesn't need to be an "us" vs. "them". There are many times I'm driving and many times I'm cycling. In either case, my intention is to be mindful and focused, especially in my car which can do a hell of a lot more damage than myself or my bike. I am quite cautious on my bike because if there is a physical interaction between me and a car, the car is gonna win.

I hope the biker is ok. This information is so limited it's impossible to speculate. Given "Keeponraining's" knee-jerk response, I wanted to say something positive here. I rode up Flagstaff to Artist's Point this morning. I was very mindful and kept in the bike lane until it disappears going up Flagstaff. There weren't many cars but each and every one of them was courteous to me, never too close and when I was returning down by Chautauqua and bikers are supposed to have the full lane, the cars stayed at a respectable distance behind me and I got back in the far right as soon as I could to make it easier for them to pass me. This is my experience almost 100% of the time I ride my bike in Boulder. I respect all the stop signs, traffic lights as I should and the cars respect the bike lanes and seem aware and considerate of the bikers.

Colorado Springs, home to Focus on the Family, Campus Crusade for Christ and the Air Force Academy, boasts over 30 thriving dispensaries. The majority of voters in all of Colorado voted for the legalization of medical marijuana. As for Boulder risking its reputation...the only thing Boulderites need to worry about is how they dress. Apparently, we're on GQ's list of the 40th worst dressed cities. Now that is something to fret about!

You said, "Never before in the history of our nation have we seen states legalizing drugs. Why now ? " All I can say is that most likely Niwotsblessing is correct. The illogic of that one statement alone negates anything you attempted to say, especially when you also add phrases like "weakening our social fabric". What do you think Alcohol is? What do you think prescription pills are? Before you pontificate about the ills and evils of legallzing medical marijuana, which the voters in this state have already deemed prudent and appropriate, pause very carefully. If you have never suffered from the effects of chemotherapy, MS, chronic pain, well the list is numerous, where research based studies are so solid they are considered fact in regards to the efficacy of this natural herb, then pray that you don't. Or be doped out on Oxycontin and Percocet and tell us how that's working for you. You're right about Federal Law exempting state law. That makes all the voters in Colorado (the majority) and the State itself co-conspirators to a Federal offense. And that's when we should all be very concerned about the powers of the Federal government versus each state to decide what is best for them.

Timing is everything and this is certainly not the time to debate whether one should have anonymity on not when making comments, as legitimate and debatable as the topic is ). And in my opinion, this isn't the time to bring up giardia, as helpful as your warning might be to others. Personally, I believe that anyone, anonymous or otherwise, should never be allowed to use "all caps" to stress their points. It comes off as yelling and invalidates any good points you may be trying to make. I am devastated for the family and friends of the good doctor and his promising and adventurous daughter and I am devastated they lost their lives on a beautiful Colorado summer day spending precious father/daughter time together. I also extend my sympathies to the boyfriend of Makana. I hope the community reaches out to this family in the coming months. Their grief will last their lifetimes and its important that those close to them keep this in mind.

I cycle on a regular basis and try to stick to bike paths or trails like the one that links to Marshall from South Boulder Road. But my favorite rides are up to NCAR and Flagstaff so obviously I am sharing the road with cars and trucks. I ride extremely defensively. I don't care if the traffic light is green, I practically slow down to a stop because I don't trust the attention span of most drivers. Since I am both a driver and a cyclist, I do wonder what the appeal is for cyclists to ride together in packs. I did a group ride once years ago and I hated it. It was quite dangerous because the riders would ride double or triple side by side in the lane so people could talk to one another or ride at a similar pace. As people would ride next to me and start talking, I just couldn't focus on the road as well as i would being alone. I have friends who want to ride with me and I say "no". It's already risky riding around town on my own. To ride with my friends is an unnecessary distraction. But this is just me. Since i choose to involve myself in a sport that contains some risk, I like to keep it to a minimum. As for this particular story, my deepest sympathies to the cyclist who died and his wife who was witness to this terrible accident. It's disturbing to hear about the road rage case the driver was involved in, and while it may not be admissible in court should it ever come to that, it's noteworthy that he had a previous incident with a cyclist. But like you, will reserve judgment on that for now.

I heard through the Boulder grapevine so make of it what you will, but my understanding is that Edie Stevens purposefully did not have an obituary written up because she did not want all of this land grab stuff stirred up. She did not have a service for him. The mortuary who handled the arrangements were the ones that notified the Daily Camera later. This is most likely true given that Ms. Stevens would not be interviewed for this article because she felt the Camera had a bias against them during the post-trial when the judge's decision was rendered. In my world, I call that major denial. Some others might call it hedonistic narcissism at its worst.

As someone who works with families in Boulder, I'm going to assume for the sake of argument that the young man was over the legal limit of alcohol for operating a vehicle. I'm also going to assume that the man comes from a family with some means given the address of his home. Because of the work I've done with parents of teenagers, I'd say that there is a very good chance that the parents will hire an attorney for Junior who will figure out a way to reduce the charges. They will allow him to keep his car that they most likely purchased for him and continue to pay the car insurance on despite the fact that Jr. is 18. They will defend this non-action by saying that they want him to experience "natural" consequences, i.e. they don't have the courage to yank Jr.'s car immediately for fear of Jr. getting mad at them or even worse, their friends might find out their son did something stupid. Jr. will expect his parents to do this for him and will express outrage if they don't help him deal "with the facist police pigs of Boulder" (I heard this word for word from a 16 year old male to his affluent father after he had been pulled over for a DUI, a DUI he had well-earned). There's a reason 40% of college freshmen are testing at 40% less ability to be empathetic as compared to their peers of twenty years ago. They have been given graduation parties from kindergarten, BMWs on their 16th birthdays, and trips around the world when they graduate from high school. They are "special". And the only ones who are really to blame: The parents. In this 18 year old's case: The 18 year old. Let's just hope that mommy and daddy don't come running in to rescue.

Daily Camera.com: : Colorado man dead after shooting on Boulder\'s University Hill - Boulder Daily Camera

Bing, I agree with you that we are always 100% responsible for our actions. No matter what. Even when we are victims, we must take 100% responsibility for decisions we make. But this sounds like Monday morning quarterbacking. I would like to think that I would not resist if I was in that situation but because I gratefully never have, I can't say for sure. What I notice, and this is what I am trying to say, is that it is very common for victims to be blamed regarding their responses to situations they've never encountered before. I think it's a way people make themselves feel better so they can think, "Well, if that young woman had only...blah blah blah, this never would have happened to them." It keeps us in our defense mechanism, aka denial, that this would never happen to us because we like to convince ourselves that we would be so calm and collected about the whole thing. We tell ourselves these things as a way to believe it won't ever happen to us. My guess is that this young woman (who remember had been out partying and may not have had all her reasoning abilities as sharp as they could be) will take responsibility for her friend's death to some degree for the rest of her life. She does not need the added heaped of judgment from those who have not walked in her shoes. The focus needs to be on the young man who shot and killed Todd Walker because bottom line, he's the one that pulled the trigger that ended this young man's life. A mugger is one who robs people. A murderer is one who kills them. Nothing should excuse Kevin McGregor from his cold-blooded killing of Mr. Walker, nor should there be any distraction or fingers pointed in the direction of anyone but him. I appreciate the civil discussion.

Thanks for writing back. First, it was another poorly written article by the Daily Camera so I take that into consideration. Second, I wasn't there and I know how unreliable third party reporting can be. Even eye witnesses are known for making horrible mistakes when trying to describe assailants etc. Third, it does sound like the woman got aggressive with her attacker and I know that, from an intellectual point of view, that is not the wisest thing to do. However, I've never been in her situation so I can't say with any kind of certainty what I would do. I have two daughters in their 20's and they have been well instructed to not respond in this kind of way. But I think perhaps this is easier said than done. Do you remember the teenage son who tried to protect his mother from a robbery when they were in Puerta Vallarta and he was shot and killed? We are human beings who are instinctively programmed to survive and we can't always predict how we will respond when being threatened. For the assailant to be so quick to shoot his gun tells me that he was indeed a very dangerous person. Most in his situation when confronted would run. But he didn't. Therefore, I have no confidence that if he was given what he was demanding he would not have harmed them anyway. That's really all I'm trying to say here. Make sense?
