Historically, the MPAA has been more lenient in their judgement of violence in films than of themes on sexuality. Does this accurately represent the values of American families trying to decide what themes are acceptable for their children to be exposed to in film? I understand the need for privacy that the MPAA claims is necessary for a reliable and consistent ratings process, but are there other ways in which their methods compromise the ratings process? Perhaps not, but we won't know unless they allow an outside organization with the nation's interests at heart to review and critique their film rating process. One place to start would be by reviewing the way other nations rate films.

One thing left out of this lengthy ACLU document is mention of evaluating the role of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) in issuing movie ratings. For example, historically the MPAA has been more lenient in their judgement of violence in films than of themes on sexuality.
