As a result of the financial crisis NYC's Department for the Aging cut funding to all the programs for people suffering from mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease or dementia. There were only 12 such small programs for a large population of these very vulnerable folks. My husband's excellent program is closing and only one of the 12 may be able to survive after substantially raising its rates. Where's the money? This issue spans the economic and health arenas. The enormous stress on families with this problem has been exposed to some degree in news stories, but the situation continues to worsen. The pain of this cuts deeply. Providing affordable or free service, so that the other spouse or caregiver can work or attend to other obligations for several hours a day is crucial. Providing the vulnerable with enjoyable, therapeutic activities among their peers represents a lifeline. Such programs are a necessity not a luxury. The Obama/Biden administration needs to guarantee that there are enough model programs to serve this a growing population as well as supporting city/state governments in this regard.
