I hope they don't sign Vazquez as I would like to see Doubront's sophomore season.

Fire Brand of the American League : Hanrahan trade a question mark for Sox

No, he shouldn't be a deal breaker, but it seems like a marginal upgrade for Hanrahan.

Fire Brand of the American League : The Three Wise Men

You might be onto something with Cody Ross, but I'm not sure. There's been rumors of the two sides talking about extensions as far back as mid-year. Granted, that could still be Ross' side. But there's been consistent reports from both sides from journalists that seem to indicate mutual interest.

Oh, I fully expect the Yankees to spend. I just don't think they land with any of these guys, although I think the best bet of one of these guys being a Yankee ends up being BJ Upton.

Fire Brand of the American League : Should the Red Sox Give Ortiz a Multi-Year Deal?

See, I'm not sure other teams would give a multiyear deal to Ortiz. He did suffer an injury in late July that knocked him out for the whole year, so that affects his market. Plus, if the Sox offer him the qualifying deal -- which they should -- most teams that would have any interest in him would lose their first. I think Papi's back on a one-year deal with perhaps a make-nice option with a high vesting figure (say, 600 PA) which is otherwise a team option.

Fire Brand of the American League : First and Foremost

If Ruf is cheap enough, I don't see why he's not worth a look. I think my preference is to go with Sands and Salty, with Lavarnway and Salty also seeing time at C. It means you have to carry a third backup catcher in all likelihood, but I'm OK with that. The outfield can be the three starting OFs, Sands for left and a fifth OF for center and right. Then you have an infield backup. That would be your bench: Backup C, Backup CF/RF, Sands/Salty/Lavarnway depending on the day, Backup IF.

LJM, thanks a lot for leaving this comment! I don't know if I think laissez faire is a good thing to abscribe to Farrell. Sure, it works better with a veteran team, but look how that turned out for Francona.

Fire Brand of the American League : Looking at the 2013 bullpen

This is a stretch. Have you seen Melancon's September numbers? And Bailey had an abbreviated season and returned from an injury that can affect contorl. I think you are jumping to conclusions. The bottom line is we won't know anything until games count again.

Fire Brand of the American League : Top Nine Red Sox Trade Assets

Jeff, I don't know if I would call it an expansion more than a recalibration of series being spread out over the year. It might actually work better because now a more traditional DH would not have to sit for weeks at a time.

Fire Brand of the American League : Which pitchers could Red Sox get?

Jeff, I agree. I would love to see Lewis in town on a 3/30 deal, and McCarthy I would really go more for a one-year deal or maybe two. His injuries scare me.

Lee would make sense, both from demeanor and ability. However, he has $90 million left on his deal over the next few years. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with such a lofty figure. Also, I think Philadelphia fully intends to hold onto him, or won't give up anything less than actual value. So I think this is a pipe dream.
