Shit, when I was 12 I was busy.....having an argument with my best friend about something I don't remember, via emails written in bright pink font?? I mean, I was also on a one-woman mission to read the entire school library, so I have that in common with Nita and Kit lol. But I certainly wasn't fighting sentient helicopters in an alternate earth hahaha

Chapter Four: In Which Everything Is Suddenly 10000% AWFUL AND TERRIFYING, WTF DIANE DUANE?!?

Hahaha, but seriously, this chapter went from like zero to a million in approximately 3 seconds; and from that moment on it didn’t slow down for the entire chapter!!! I read this entire bit with knots in my stomach and twitchy hands and just akjhkjsdfhskdjfhsk. SO SCARY WHAT THE HELL. Okay *deep breath*. Onto something slightly more coherent!

* I’ve mentioned before that one of thing things I lovelovelove about DD’s books is the way she writes imagery in a way that just picks you up and sets you right down in the middle of the action. What happens in this chapter is so odd and out of the ordinary that I think it definitely could have come off as just confusing and strange in a way that removed you from what was happening? But with the way DD writes, from the starless and moonless sky, to the fucking creepy helicopter monster with faceted eyes, something this bizarre is legitimately frightening!

* ….At least Nita finally got her pen back?

* Ok so the helicopter insect monster is super scary, and then there’s an awesome fight scene between the three of them, and then…. it turns out that the helicopter monster….had helicopter monster-babies?!? Um, what? What the fuck?
* For a split second I was tempted to find them creepy-yet-cute, buuuuut then the book mentions the dead dog and everything is awful again. Hooray!
* I repeat. Helicopter monster babies

* You thought it was just going to be evil mechanical creatures? Hahaha, nope, there’s the ultimate evil somewhere out in not-new york, just chilling.
* Nita: “Let’s go steal the dark book!” WELL OK THEN!

* Seriously, Nita is such a badass, and I love the way her mind works! She’s got this super creative way of going about problem solving, albeit a way that doesn’t seem to mind considering the most dangerous option possible, see: walking across hardened air in the middle of the sky, stealing something known for being so terrible that it has the ability to possibly end the universe.

* Finally, can I just remind everyone that Nita and Kit are around 13 years old?!? Fucking hell, if this was me now at 21, I would be running off and just hiding somewhere for the foreseeable future! These kids are barely even teenagers and they’re already straight up BAMFs, good god I love them!

Seriously, if by some miracle someone had got me on that damn air bridge, you better believe I'd be fucking crawling!

Soooo I’ve had a pretty bad fear of heights ever since I was about 12 or so, and on a school camp they got us to do a high ropes course. I was a third of the way through when I slipped off of the wire - I was fine, I got caught by the harness and everything, but it scared me so badly I started crying, insisted on getting down immediately, and never did a height-related camp activity ever agin. I’m mostly ok with tall buildings, but this was my thought process when I realised what Nita was thinking:

* OMG OMG OMG THEY’RE GOING TO WALK ON THIN AIR 70 STORIES UP OMFG HELP
* NITA WHAT R U DOING
* NITA NO
* STOP
* Poor Kit has to be the voice of reason, listen to Kit, Nita, I know you have magic but really
* OMG KIT NO, DON’T AGREE WITH HER!! SKJFHSKJDFHSKJDFH
…And so on and so forth hahaha

Other points of note in this chapter part were:
* Surprise cactus!

* Wow, Kit convincing the door to unlock is adorable and i love it
* Also this makes me think - you know how when something inanimate is stuck or not behaving how it should, and you mutter and grumble and issue threats? What if when you start learning wizardry and you forget and still do this, things just start reacting to you doing it, like getting all offended by you insulting them?

* Holy crap, timeslide spells sound terrifying!!!!
* Maybe the difference between their reactions to the timeslide is because of their different magical specialisations?

* Oh Sweet Jesus, first the heights thing and now mysterious noises on the rooftop and weird feelings of being watched? Why, what have I done to deserve this, me a perfectly good person who has never done anything wrong in her life ever.

* That fucking pigeon that hits the air-bridge-walkway thing, my heart was in my throat, I just - no harnesses, no ropes, no nothing WHY

* oh god oh god something’s going to happen
* oh noooooo
* OMFG FERAL GHOST NIGHTMARE-HOPPING DEMON WOLVES WTF WTF WTF
* Also: oooh, so that’s what happens to utter asshats when they die - their hatred turns them into feral-ghost-nightmare-hopping-demon-wolves. Makes sense I guess!

Got to admit, I'm a teensy bit worried about what we're going to find in Chapter 4!

Huh, I just checked the phrasing in the book - and then googled it - and I think you're right! I think I just assumed "in the back of" in my head, because I don't think I've really heard the phrase "in back of" before, or at least not often :) But yeah, so maybe the worldgate's supposed to be behind the deli, but for some reason it's not?

“How else should our children climb to the stars but up our branches?” I know that there’s plot ramping up and NYC and worldgates and whatnot - but I’m stuck on the gorgeous, heart breaking conversation with the rowan tree, Liused. I just - natural disasters and changing climates and environments are the result of old magical conflicts! Children talking to the trees they play in and the trees talking back! ***All the trees in the world view humanity as their children!!!!!*** Oh my goodness, that entire passage was so wonderful and packed full of new details about the magical Earth, and gorgeous prose. Diane Duane, I have this feeling your books are going to twist my heart around many times over before we’re done <3

Other notes:

* I actually spent about 5 months of last year studying at a university on Long Island! I was on a student exchange from my uni in Queensland, Australia, and my friends and I (a mish-mash of other exchange students from around the world and some local students) would get up early every Saturday and take the LIRR all the way into Penn Station. The description of what Nita and Kit and Fred see coming into Manhattan brought back a lot of wonderful memories. I miss it all so much!

* If wizards in this world specialise in a kind of magic - i.e. Nita with growing things and Kit with mechanical type things - then I would want either animals (omg can you even imagine?!?) or books to be mine. Making friends with all the wildlife! Or books! Being able to talk to books and listen to them talk back; about who wrote them and who has read them and, and, and - BOOKS

* Also I was like “haha ofc the worldgate is in the back of a deli - but now, maybe it’s not?!? Argh, I have a new appreciation for Mark’s self control, it’s so hard to keep myself from reading further!!! I wanna know what’s happeningggggg.
