I think the paywall will hurt the NYTimes. Is there anyone at the NYTimes who anyone absolutely must consult before making a decision? No. Well, that is my answer. Unlike in the past, the wire services are sending breaking news directly to our phones. The only way that the NYTimes can sell itself, in this era, is to explain the news to us like no other. I don't think it can do so.

Most of the "real news" published in the NY Times comes through wire services. You still have access to those. A 20 story per day limit? Who reads 20 stories in the NY Times per day? I start with the easy Sudoku puzzle and work through to the hardest. While there, I browse the trending stories. None of them are news to me when I get there. I already "follow" most of the wire services on Twitter. By the time I am temporarily stumped on the "expert" Sudocku puzzle, the only column I want to read is Bittman's.

Newspapers never made money from subscriptions, but always made money from their subscriber base. Subscriptions showed advertisers who would be reading their ads. The NY Times, and all print publications, need to get with the times, hehe, and understand how to deal with their new medium. No one will be foolish enough to pay for a subscription (unless for wrongly perceived status upgrades) to something for which access is a only a web search away.

In civilized cities, they actually tell you which side of the sidewalk you are to walk on. In my city it is rumored that you walk on the wrong side even until risk of death of dismemberment. I have a running fantasy of instruments I will carry or (spiked shouldered) gear I will wear to put errant walkers in their place. For the time being, I just stand completely still when the inevitable collision transpires. Then when the "bitch, you..."happens, I am blame free. Also, I keep rock solid, so it stings.
