After a night of drinking all the coffee and playing Timbit hockey, we would head up the street to my friend's house and sleep until dinner. Then we'd stash our uniforms in a bag and head out to a party until it was time for work. For three months, the only adults I interacted with were shift workers, insomniacs, and the homeless. Last summer I saw them doing something that, if I'm right about what it is they're doing, blows my mind. They swoop down to the beach and come back to the road with a mollusk. Then they fly up to one of the power/telephone lines that runs across the street and drop the food to break the shell. That's pretty standard crow stuff, but the freaky thing is that before they fly to a wire, they bob their heads up and down a few times while holding the shell. I think they're figuring out whether they need to go to the highest wire or not. If they pick the low wire and the shell doesn't break when they drop it, they get sort of . . . embarrassed. Like the other crows look at the guy who couldn't judge his mollusk correctly and pass judgement. We ended up with gigantic rats when construction started across the street and, being a house of naive vegetarians, we called up a humane trapping company to come get our rats and take them to a nice rat spa somewhere outside of the city.
