Sorry, for taking so long to respond. I have a lot of trouble navigating this site. I got kicked off somehow and could not return to this page.

You have answered each point in my simple example and I appreciate what you are saying. That example does not provide you with enough information to really make a judgement in my case. I used it only to high light the larger point that lower grades are not always a function of low effort. And for that matter lower grades don't necessarily mean you have lower understanding of the materal being taught. (Another simple example would be testing methods and subjective grading standards -- but let's not start that discussions! :-) )

We could go at this for awhile. I hope you appreciate my larger point -- that grades are a function of a lot of variables some of which are not academic.

I did not say he failed. But other responsibilities did not afford him the time that would have resulted in higher grades.

My only point is that life happens and sometimes it impacts grades. You just can't use the blanket statement that if you have lower grades a person is not trying or even doing his or her best. If a person is doing their best but can only manage C's they should therefore not get or have to pay more for their education?

....tell us your goals for 2009 ....

My goals for 2009 include:
1. In addition to paying for health insurance which is way to costly
---- Be proactive in my health and exercise, eat right, meditate, lose 20 pounds by June 30th
2. Be a better parent
3. Get debt free except for mortgage
4. Stay politically involved -- watch c-span (heavy sigh)
5. Become very knowledgeable (to the point of being and expert) on one or two of the issues

That would have meant 12 years of Bush/Cheney. That knife cuts both ways.

Hello Paul Schmitz,

I think the government can support local service activites by

1.) focusing the spotlight on giving back to your community -- which you already are
2.) maybe establish a fund to fund short term projects -- based on proposals submitted by individuals focused on recommended specific areas of need identified by the administration -- new initatives only
3.) citywide volunteer seminars(basic show and tell) where people come together to inform the community of what they do and the type of help they need

That's off the top of my head. I look forward to more dialogue on this topic.

Hello Christina Romer,
"What are the economic pressures are you facing in your lives?", was the question you posed.

In my life I am faced with elderly parents and grandparents on fixed and very low incomes. A sibling who has lost a home and is basically homeless and having difficulty getting medical help. My task is to keep them housed and fed and maintain a life for my family. I currently am trying to start a business from home which is not taking off very well in this economy. The other factor is that we do not live in the same city. High gas prices limits my abilty to respond or even be proactive in their lives. Nobody talks about how families are spread out across the county. Small towns are dying and the elderly are left alone as their children go seek opportunities elsewhere. I was spending over $1,000 a month cris crossing the country trying to stablize my family. That was just to get there!
