I would be proud to have you as a friend, but not to demonstrate my "diversity stripes" (as many on the left do) but because of the content of your character. You are willing to speak the truth no matter where that truth may lead and that takes character. Of all of the great things MLK did and said in his life to me the most important statement (his capitol statement as you said) that has guided my life and convictions was his statement that we should judge people not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Unfortunately it seems too many people cannot let go of their anger and hate and because of this have forgotten to remember and live by this very important and profound truth that MLK gave to all of us at the expense of his very life.
