One of the modifications was a taller tail. The reason was that during the war a lot of pilots killed themselves during a go-around by applying full power - the sudden engine torque would cause the plane to roll onto its back. Although not a problem at high speed, it does demonstrate the plane's sensitivity to roll forces. My guess is that the loss of a vertical trim tab that had an unusually high offset would probably cause the plane to immediately roll. Still, a pilot of Leeward's experience should have been able to quickly react and maintain control, so I'm guessing there were additional factors involved.
