I don't think I've ever had so many nuns during a post. SO MANY YOU GUYS.
I logged in just to second Mark on reading Perdido Street Station and The Scar (and everything else China Mieville has ever written, really). Those books are AMAZING, particularly The Scar. Read them you guys.
I haven't read Kraken yet, but I had to flail when you brought up China Mieville. I have read 3-4 of his books and I absolutely love his prose and how unsettling his work is.
Well, so this is the chapter I made it to before I just broke down and read the whole book yesterday. I am really bad at this.
New book! I rarely have a chance to comment these days, and I'm so hopelessly behind on Watches it sucks, but I do keep up with Reads. I bought this book this morning, and I know absolutely NOTHING about it other than Gaiman wrote it. Never even read a blurb for it or anything, so this should be interesting. Let us commence the game of "How Long Can Niky Read At This Pace Before She Stays Up All Night And Finishes The Book."
I haven't seen it - because I had a literal panic attack during the preview for it that I saw while watching The Great Gatsby. I'm super claustrophobic and while space seems like the complete opposite of an enclosed space, watching that preview felt really the same. *SHUDDERS*
(cont) But anyway, you don't need me to validate your life choices so let me just say that I personally love these books, love reading about teenagers dealing with things and having real emotions and not being looked down on for them (I mean, I'm 38 but I remember very well what it felt like to be a teenager), and finding the drama flowing from the characters themselves and not contrived plot instances. That is what makes a difference, for me. Thanks to whoever got Mark to read these, and hence me, because they're GREAT!
Ugh, you shouldn't have to defend your enjoyment of this book! To be honest with you, when I started reading Unspoken, I didn't expect to like it, because the gothic stuff really isn't my style, and honestly, a lot of people write teenagers in the most annoying way possible, so I was pretty skeptical that I was going to enjoy it. And guess what? I DO. A LOT. After only about 3 chapters into the first book, I was completely hooked, and I sped through both books in one weekend (I need the next one STAT). Like you said, not everyone has to like it, but feeling like you specifically couldn't possibly enjoy it and are just ... what, sucking up to an author?... is pretty ridiculous, IMO.
