I'm white, and like you said - love me some Jane Austen. I think you may be onto something with it being an issue of exposure. If a person is not introduced to her works for whatever reason, then maybe there isn't as much of a chance to fall in love with them. I found your analysis of the situation to be very interesting, and after reading I think that it may be a cultural thing as well. Many other exemplary works of literature may be emphasized to black girls other than Austen that take the precedence in some way??

This issue just seems like it needs to be someone's masters or doctoral thesis or something so that it can be examined in more depth.

Yep -- the love for that series cannot be understood until you finally take the plunge for yourself. I was late to the series, finally reading them the year before DH came out. It seriously changed me as a reader and a writer.

Wow! You've inspired me to start trying to read more Printz books. I think you could still do a year long challenge if there isn't one out there. I think this is one a lot of people would be interested in joining!!! :)

Thanks for posting this. These stories need to be told, and they sound like very interesting reads as well. Split was my favorite book that I read this year. The emotions and the characters are the strongest that I have seen, well, EVER.

It's sad, but this is kind of the conclusion I've come to at my job, too.... :) And it's so therapeutic!

I was planning to really get to that today, but I missed it so narrowly because I had to go to work! DARN IT! By the time I got there, it had already closed again!!! I guess there's always tomorrow!

This is hands-down the most well-written YA paranormal series.
