I have insurance, but when you show up for an appt. you don't know how much each little thing they want to do is going to cost you, how much insurance will cover on each item, and how can you comparison shop, as they won't talk to you unless you make an appt. for which you have to pay. EXAMPLE: I have a thyroid condition, I got my medicine, but had a question, so instead of calling, and NOT getting a call back from the DR., I decided to stop by the office and ask the nurse to ask my question for me. Well, she put me in an exam room, and the DR. popped in and answered my question, took him maybe a minute and a half and he was out the door. When I got my next insurance 'bill' with the charges submitted to them, this DR. charged me $150.00 for that question. Was that right? No, I don't think so.....
I think insurance companies are actually bad. They drive up costs--because they charge the medical people so much for malpractice insurance. There needs to be a stop on ridiculous malpractice suits and ridiculous lawsuits in general. Like the hot coffee lawsuit, for example.
I'd like to see medical treatment readily available, at a reasonable charge. I suppose that's impossible. But why are they allowed to decide vision correction isn't covered, when a simple surgery is actually a CURE for the condition?!! And everyone knows that having bad teeth can shorten your life by many years, and yet this is not covered under basic health insurance. Why is that, aren't your eyes and teeth part of the 'body' that you bought coverage on?!!
