We shall see, but I think the Hawks beat a quality team Saturday. The OL did their homework this off season. This staff really prepares these guys over the course of their career. When it's time to step in these kids are ready. Impressive showing, Now on to the trap game.

That's the question of the day. Who's to say that if they played in the Pac-10 that they would average 8 wins a year? Impressive win over #10 VT. Not to take away from it, but they were lucky to pull it out. If you watched the game, you know that VT spotted them ten points right off. Well see how good of a win it was once VT starts conference games, but 1 big win in the first week and everyone has Boise in the NC game. Sorry, but I'm not buying.

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa, Ferentz could see 2020

I like your logic. I'm all in on picturing them traveling by bus to every game on 80. It's a nice visual and puts me in a happy place. I have no doubt that Barta pushed for it, but I wonder how much pull he has. I got to see Osborne on the BTN and he made special mention (again no brainer) about Iowa. I just know that a lot of us, including you, thought Alvarez might get his way. We all know he has some clout or maybe he's just more boisterous about his self perceived inflated position in the pecking order. I like where Iowa ended up despite the Purdue rivalry. Add that news to the new Ferentz contract (see how I tied that in) and I'm a happy kid. Top it off with Wegher suited up tomorrow and I'll be pinching myself.

Off the subject, but I don't credit Barta trumping Alvarez for the Hawks spot in the new divisions. I'm speculating, but I think Osbourne made the call and had more pull than Alvarez. Ferentz can pretty much write his own ticket at Iowa and he's earned that right. Amazing that it was only 3 years ago that the fickle were calling for his head. If only the fans were as loyal as he's been.

GazetteOnline.com : Here are the divisions (with schedule, Iowa statement)

I'm old school and struggling, but at the same time a proponent of the expansion. I'll just say it now, where does ND fit into this schedule. That's inevitable. I was loving the beginning of the PSU rivalry, glad Hawks can keep beating on the Gophers, but hate playing NW (Fitz is a thorn in our side). I guess the Husker rivalry sets all things right. That's going to be a heck of a game. Hopefully it renders OSU-Michigan obsolete. Wishful thinking I know. Homer once again.

Love that the agents have to go through mom. AC has it figured out,"You get people trying to be your friend, people you’ve never talked to and all of the sudden you’re buddy-buddy,” he said. “That’s kind of weird. You have to be realistic about it. You know they’re not trying to be your buddy, so you keep it on the professional level and tell them you’re not looking for a buddy, you’re looking for someone to represent you.” It's not so complicated for college athletes to know what the rules are with agents. What they aren't tough enough to do is resist temptation. On the outside it sure seems as though this program and these kids will avoid the nonsense going on around the country. I know I'm a homer, but for now I'm happy believing this to be the case.

GazetteOnline.com : Cost of celebrity

Segue: is a smooth transition from one topic or section to the next. Apparently you did miss something here. There was no segue. If you reread the headline it states,"Cost of Celebrity." Mark used Clayborn's stalker story as an example of the pitfalls that Iowa athletes face from the "celebrity" that their talents bring. Of course most of the recognition is positive, but there is often the cautionary tale from being in the spotlight that burns so bright from this amazing fan-base. Asking Stanzi, one of the most celebrated faces of the Hawks, about the subject seems pretty obvious. Not sure why that confuses you?

GazetteOnline.com : Love it or leave it -- The Ricky Stanzi Explanation

Finally, the truth. Such a simple explanation. I want the time back I spent looking for a Ricky Bobby clip. Still a genius answer and a huge fan of Ferentz budget cut comment. Angerer was the guy to qoute last year.

GazetteOnline.com : The next phase

Ideally I'd love to see ND and Rutgers be the final two pieces. ND's arrogance is rooted in the past. Their supremacy isn't going to return with the hiring of Brian Kelly. Despite being in a rivalry with most Big 10 teams (no different than their current schedule), I think it would make them relevant again in FB and help out their other sports. As you and everyone else have pointed out, Rutgers brings in the east coast $'s. While not there yet, the last few years Rutgers has been building towards being a Big 10 caliber team. The fans have been great. Maybe this would be the final push. It's better than adding Syracuse or UConn. Texas and Oklahoma staying put means Delaney wins this round. Despite my intense dislike, I'm happy for Iowa State. Loved the fight from football and wrestling this year despite coaching disloyalty. So far Big 10 conference is improving it's success from a power perspective, but now they need to consistently add the wins.

GazetteOnline.com : Good for Todd Lickliter -- he gets a warm reception from his Butler friends

I seem to be the only person that thinks his firing was premature. A lot of Butler's success can be attributed to Lickliter, which is why he was warmly received. Iowa knew his type of basketball when they hired him. Everyone forgets that he inherited many of the players that decided to not to play for him or his system. We got to see some progress from the team's play by the end of the season, but it wasn't enough for W's. I think he should have gotten at least one more year to see some results with his system and players that he recruited. Having said that, if more players were threatening to leave than I understand. It's just hard to believe that a guy that was so well liked and successful at his last gig, was so unsuccessful at Iowa. Surely he's not the only on to blame. I think we all played a role, even as fans. Here's hoping this sacrificial firing is the spark that this once proud program needs. If not than it's a sad reflection of our win now mentality. Everything good requires hard work. I learned that lesson well as an out of state kid that loved his experience as a Hawkeye. I've always held the Iowa fans in high regard for their recognizing and acknowledging those efforts. For whatever reason it didn't happen in this case or when the football team struggled in 2007. We're better than that.

GazetteOnline.com : Spring break shields Iowa players from the gore

I agree with most of what you say, but I disagree about the Big Ten Network taking away from game attendance. It certainly hasn't hurt other Big Ten teams. You can argue that some teams are closer to larger metropolitan areas, but Iowa fans always been loyal supporters. You can't blame Lickliter for the attendance woes either. I've always bragged about the loyalty of Hawk fans and am disappointed that they abandoned this team. Gatens and co. deserve fan support. One of my favorite stories about Hawk fans was when Iowa was trying to hire Hayden Fry. They showed him video of a full stadium with a losing team. His comment was look how excited they get for 1st down, wait until they see a touchdown. I wish Hawk fans were still around regardless of the current struggles.
