Race Relations Project : South Park...off the hook?

I think that South Park is a great show because it creates tension and makes satire out of the crazy world that we live in. I think that it does an incredibly creative job looking at our world and showing us things that we may never have thought about. There are a number of jokes and lines within South Park that I feel make reference to everyday life as well as the political process and those associated or in the process of making law that may be extremely controversy or the people that are in charge of making this law. However, I feel that there are certain subjects that must not be touched or played around with because they will indeed offend and hurt particular groups of people. On South Park, there are numerous skits and scenes that depict many religious figures such as Jesus, Mohammed, and various Hindu gods. I think that portraying these many religious figures is a hit or ignorance towards those who practice this faith day in and day out. I think that although religion is responsible for many of the decisions made in our world and the ideals and concepts behind religion are used to interpret our everyday life and real world I think that religion is too sacred to be mocked. Second, there are many religions that are mocked to the point where something is portrayed that many people in the religion don’t practice or see as wrong themselves. In the case of Muslims, there are many portrayals of suicide bombings and practices such as this that show Muslims killing many people who are not Muslim. I think this is where many people get a negative experience and idea from the show. It is generalizing an entire group of people that has been based off the actions of one group of people. I think that although this is a cartoon many people can take this adult cartoon serious or look deeper into the messages that the cartoon is offering and showing to the entire world. I think it is a problem when a large number of people feel disrespected because their faith and religion has been tested and mocked at the highest level of mocking. I understand that the mocking and satire may be equally distributed, but the cartoon is an American made cartoon that is more biased to appeal to the American people rather than the people of other nations or cultures. We must become smarter when we decided what to put on TV and what not to put on TV. Media is an extremely powerful tool that can be used to reach the masses and not all people have the same intellect or capabilities that will brush off a potential negative reaction to what is depicted. We must become more careful and tentative about what is shown and be more open to the worlds of others.

Race Relations Project : What about health care?

I am strong supporter of the new health care bill that has just come out. However, this bill is used to help those who are paying taxes and those who are giving to the United States of America. I don’t think that non-citizens should have health care. I think that they should try to get the necessary funds to pay for their own. Part of being an American citizen is reaping the benefits of the country in which millions serve and owe a great deal to in the U.S. I think that health care for a citizen is a right and a privilege. If we do open this health care up to immigrants I think that there needs to be strict guidelines as well as procedures to follow in order to possibly or potentially provide for their health care.

Race Relations Project : What about people who can only "afford hard work"?

I have always been a proponent for hard work. I think that through hard work anything in this world and in life can be accomplished. I also think that there are certain values that one can carry along with them and can learn as they are doing this hard work. Hard work in life allows us to appreciate the things that we earn in life. It is the greatest humbler I think that we have in the United States because there is nothing like completing a task through hours, days, or maybe even months of hard work. I think that there are a number of immigrants that come to the U.S. with money, but I don’t think they possess the values and character as many of the other immigrants because they have had it easier to succeed in the U.S.

Race Relations Project : Women

I think that this is a familiar problem that many women have towards one another. Many feel as though they are indeed different than the other women, but in reality women are all incredibility discriminated against and placed in lower social roles than men. Women are indeed the same people regardless of background. Women as a whole across the entire globe are unequal in each and every society in some respect that has led to the constant maltreatment of women and their categorization in some cultures as subhuman or subservient. I am happy that this point was brought up because it allows for people all people and women most importantly to sit back and think about their gender as a whole and not simply through the eyes of an individual.

Race Relations Project : Creating Terrorists

There are many countries in this world that lack the stability that we possess in the United States. I don’t find this article to be incredibly surprising because terrorism is already created by the everyday human being and person. It is the lowest form of military action or revenge that any person can take into their hands. This video is quite revealing of the reality of someone who has taken the revenge aspect f the terrorism upon themselves. In an effort to get revenge for her husband’s death this video shows a woman who is in the process of fighting numerous people and then she blew herself up. Many of the comments I have read express the fact that it may not be terrorism because she is avenging her husband, but I see anyone who is willing to blow themselves up as a terrorist act and plot that has occurred. This is scary to me because this video and action occurred in a relatively developed country Russia. I think that in many of the less powerful or stable countries acts such as these happen on a regular basis. I have never seen anyone die and cannot imagine what it would be like to see this atrocity happen possibly on a day to day basis. Terrorism is a major threat and problem in our world because it can disrupt a number of daily life chores and events. It can hurt the economy, cripple the public transportation numbers, and cause people to live a life in fear rather than freedom and the ability to do anything in life. There have been recent developments in the United States with a party known as the Tea Party who have taken their views to the extreme. Recent reports have stated that the government is indeed watching this party as a potential terrorist organization because of their intense views, names towards the president and their members consist of some individuals who are prone to violence. There was also another group who was arrested for a plot to overthrow a town government and staged military training sessions in the wooded areas surrounding their homes. These two examples are proof that we are able to create terrorist and that anyone and everyone can be a terrorist. It is a troublesome concept because one can never know what to expect if one is forced to live in fear. This is what the United States government has been facing in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is why the war has been a arduous struggle to win and gain an upper hand. I think that in the case of this women who is avenging her husband’s death it is still an act of terrorism. She has taken matters into her hands and paid the ultimate price for fighting back.

Race Relations Project : Isn't a person's qualifications an issue?

I completely disagree with this statement that affirmative action places unqualified people into fields. I think that affirmative action seeks out the best potential candidate from an underrepresented group and give them the chance to compete and excel with the majority that have a number and plethora of people who have been granted certain privileges and resources for various opportunities in life. This is a common statement that is brought up about affirmative action, which I think is garbage. If there are unqualified people getting elevated it is because the people doing the hiring have made a bad decision to elevate that person or place them in that position. The truth is no one truly knows who benefits from affirmative action or who has been chosen or picked because of affirmative action. We must realize that this is not a tool used to help out any less privileged person but to give those who are excelling a chance to succeed like everyone else. It is up to the people who are picking to make sure that they are doing the right job when this picking and choosing is carried out.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

First off, I can’t believe that anyone in the world would make a game that encourages the rape and sexual violence against women. I have played a number of video games here in the U.S. that I have felt were controversial such as Grand Theft Auto and many others; however, I have never seen a game such as this where women are sought out stalked and raped throughout the entire video game. I think that women’s rights groups have all the reason and justification to oppose, lash out, and fight against a game that condones and promotes this type of behavior. I am a firm believer that video games can cause children and adults to act a certain way. It is a mental and psychological stimulation that causes people to have a reaction and perform the actions that occur in this game. Many people will say that this game will not hurt people or cause people to do certain acts because it is a hentai or cartoon. However, I feel that even though this video game is a cartoon it is extremely graphic and gruesome the acts that are performed on the women of this video game. Furthermore, I think that this game is a testimony to those video game makers in the United States. There has been much uproar about the video games in the U.S., but after viewing this video it is clear to see that these types of games have been around for a longer amount of time then some of the graphic video games in the U.S. I also think that this may say a little something about the Japanese people and culture. For years, these games have been on the market where people have routinely bought and sold these video games from the market and have condoned the actions of these video games. I am firmly against the actions and depictions of these video games, but I would like to see if rape and violent acts have gone up in the Japanese society. There are many studies and research that has been done to report the negative effects of video games on individuals’ behavior. This would serve as a perfect test and experiment. The only reason we are just now finding out about these games is because of the internet and the enhancement of globalization. My question is why have we come to this point? Why do we think that it is right and to project rape and violence in video games? These acts are horrible and can ruin someone’s life and their perspective on life and the people in their lives. I think that we have gone too far in an effort to please the masses of people. Something must be done because these video games may be a glimpse into a bad future.

Race Relations Project : Nothing About the Census is Easy

I think that the census system is definitely flawed. There are too many categories for someone to identify their race. I think that there must be a simplification of the census questions that will make it easier on people and how they identify themselves. We must be able to identify regions of the world and be able to place people according to these regions because too many people have black and brown skin and who may be mixed with a number of races and identification for many people is self reported. This is a very important survey that takes into account the entire population of the United State and it is important to have accurate results from tests that properly identify its people.

Race Relations Project : The White Minorities

I think that this story and rate of population growth in the minority races is going to test the social fabric of the United States of America. I think that it will genuinely test the hierarchy that is apparent in our society. There are a number of major businesses that are run and operated by the white race. I think that it will be very interesting to see what will occur when minorities are the majority and what will happen to this hierarchy. I honestly do not feel that the power or hierarchy will shift. I am under the impression that there will be a major social power struggle.

Race Relations Project : Revisioning the Revisioning Stage

I think that this reaction and the revision process getting stepped into as the first stage is more of a common trait that happens with Whites today because I think the world is more of a diverse place. There are still a number of Whites that live in isolated areas away from the minorities of the United States of America. However, the increasing number of minorities and the rate at which minorities inhabit the United States is growing as well. As a result, there is much mixing and diverse neighborhoods that are springing up in this country. Whites are thus learning early about the difference and similarities of the White and various minority cultures. I think that this is a great experience and concept that is starting to occur. I think that this phenomenon is sparking the overall understanding of various cultures. It is causing Whites as well as minorities to ask and question each other for the good. Questions regarding hair, clothes, music, and food need to be asked and understood because then the people and the cultures will come together at an even faster rate. I think that in the United States we are faced with an extreme problem of people who are unable to understand and take an empathetic approach to life. Because of this new mixing of people we are now moving beyond the stage where we have to tell people what is happening. They are now realizing the differences themselves as they grow up through life and through the interactions with these various cultures. I think that we as a whole need o be in culturally diverse cultures and around various people. The girl in this video has already realized the benefits of being around people outside of her race because she has learned from them as they have learned from her. Here at Penn State, I have tried not to focus my life and my attention on one group of people or race of people. Because I have been able to balance my friendships and opening myself up to many different people it has helped me to understand the many different ways of life in our world. The world is such a big place and there are so many people that I think it is ignorant as a human being not to try and get to know about as many people and cultures that exist on this globe. The fact is that once we live and work in the same environment on a day to day basis I feel that the barriers begin to fall and that people begin to understand that people are all people regardless of skin tone and color. I am happy that this point was brought up in the comments because it is a reality and concept that is happening a very fast rates.

Race Relations Project : Native Hawaiians. Ever think of them?

This is another example of the American genocide that took place as we populated and took over this set of land. No one or rarely do many people discuss Native Americans in general so discussion of the Native Hawaiians is almost non-existent. It is a shame to think that so many native people inherited the lands we call home. There were millions of these people and today all of these people have perished and passed away. I am sad to say that this is a perfect example of the dark history that America has that many people do not discuss, but we need to take responsibility for our actions and try to replenish and hold onto the cultures of these islands. It is a shame to think that we have wiped out so many people in such a short time.

Race Relations Project : What are all of you thinking about Asians?

In my experience with Asian Americans, many of them have considered themselves white. They have taken on many vestiges and norms of the white culture and I don’t think that many Asians consider themselves to be in the group with brown and black people. The think the Asian culture is very different from many of the other cultures in the world because it is so ancient. The history of Asians and Asian people is different and longer than many of the cultures around the world. Asians may even be in a category all by themselves. I also think that because there are so many different kinds of Asians and cultures in Asia that it is in fact its own category or classification. I think it can be difficult for Asians to identify with a certain race or group of people. It is a clear example of how difficult it can be sometimes to identify, but maybe it is ultimately up to us for self-identification.

Race Relations Project : Flip the Script for a Moment

Questioning I think is the only true way to learn about the world and people in the world around us. During the times of segregation people lacked the drive to question. During this time, we had a enormous separation of the races and of many different people that could and would have learned from one another if they would have questioned one another. Instead, we were given a time where the world was more so backwards. We lived in a world where children were not receiving the same education and opportunities as each other. There was true and clear racism that existed in our world and there was a problem that existed with how we dealt with these problems. Many answered or responded to this way of life through acts of violence and atrocities that caused the racism in America to grow much larger than ever before. Others such as King made efforts to respond to these inequalities with non-violence and protests against the government and machine that controlled the environment and everyday way of life. There is a problem I feel when we are unable to question and challenge one another. Many people lose sight that questioning and pursuing what is right is actually the correct form of action that we must take in order to understand and get along with one another. Since the Civil Rights movement we had a number of people who were willing and who have questioned the world and the way it is around us. From this group of people who were willing to question and interact with others the different cultures and races of people then began to learn from one another. We began to coexist with one another and learn about the ways of life that others may practice that we don’t practice. Questioning is nothing more than a formal way of understanding and realizing what is around you. This world is a very big place. It holds many different people and ethnicities that are still not understood. We can only understand the world around us if we go out and pursue the various people and the world around us. We cannot live in dark away from these people because in the end it will only hurt us and all that we are trying to do. The fact of the matter that if someone did not have the strength and guts to question the world around us the world and the progress that we have made thus far in race relations would have ceased to exist. Since the 50s we have come an incredibly long way when it comes to race relations, but there is still more work and progress to be done and to be made.

I think that what I got out the book was to simply give every person we meet and see a chance. There are so many people in this world and this means there are so many opportunities learn new ways of life and things everyday. I think that once we pass the race barrier and the perceptions of other people we can open our minds so much to different aspects and experiences in life. I like this book because it offered a real commentary, ideas and thoughts on what she was going through and feeling at each moment of the book and moment of her life. Although simple in structure it is it is real and says everything that each of us may be thinking, which allows the audience to relate. I think my outlook is getting better of different peoples, but at the same time it still is very hard to change what I have known for so long in life.

Race Relations Project : What happens to multiracial people?

I think that multiracial people can struggle with this question. I have often been asked if I was mixed because of my lighter skin, but of my parents are Black. What I have found when I have been asked this question is that I can see how hard it is for a multiracial person to identify who they are or what they are. I think for a multiracial person it depends on how that person was raised and how they self-identify. I have met many mixed people who have only identified with one particular side or race because those are the people they grew up with and the culture they inherited. I think if we didn't see color we all would be able to fit in and not have to worry about who to identify with. This is an example of how another social construction has affected the lives of certain people.

Race Relations Project : Does this rudeness thing cut both ways?

I to like many of my peers believe that this is an interesting topic that has been brought to attention. As an African American male I myself can relate to this problem that arises. I have found that many people do tend to remain quiet if Black people are rude rather than if white people are rude. I think this is an example of an inherent racism that people are too afraid to speak up against the Black people and their rudeness as they are so able to speak against the white people. The racism lay not in the fact that Blacks get away with this rudeness, but that when they do act in such a manner many people who do not correct these people because of what they may have seen in the media or what they may have heard about how Black people react to criticism or being corrected. I am a firm believer that when someone is wrong they are wrong. In no way am I condoning the rudeness of Black people of White people, but I will say that the way people decided which person they want to correct is part of something they have seen or heard before. This question of rudeness I feel is not simply a question that is raised only about this topic. I think that there are a number of other situations and scenarios that can be brought to attention where certain people only correct or talk to certain races of people. Most of these scenarios or situations I have found occur in very public places and environments where people must expose themselves in order to rectify the situation. There are only a handful of people that I think are willing to stick their necks out like that and say something to people. It takes a lot of courage to stand up for what you were taught and believe in and impose it on another person especially if you hold a certain perspective or stereotype on that particular person. This problem can only corrected I believe at the beginning of each of our lives. It starts with the values we are taught in the home and from the mentors that grow up and guide up through our daily and entirety of our lives. This idea or concept may sound Utopic, but it is a real solution to a real problem that can be easy fixed. Exposure for children is the key to opening their eyes to the world, which will allow them to see the world without color, class, and separation of people. There are many race relation discussions, but many of these happen when it may be too late and people have already developed a view of the world. The earlier we teach each other about each other the right way we will be able to avoid situations where rudeness or obscenities can be corrected by all regardless of one’s color.

Race Relations Project : This Is Getting to Be Too Much

This is yet another example that racism is alive and well in the United States of America. It serves as a prime example that misunderstandings and struggles between races of people is real. This is completely absurd that these students thought it was fine to hold a Compton party and mock Black History Month. I am not sure how we can combat actions such as these. There has been much race relation discussion throughout the country and there have been many changes. All we can do to fight these actions are to simply continue to live a good life. There can be no retaliation by the minority students at the University of California – San Diego. They must simply bite the bullet and strive to be the best and live morally. Many people are ignorant and many people will remain ignorant. This is a fact that is real. The only way to combat ignorance is to be successful through one’s self and to make those that are ignorant eat their own words.

Race Relations Project : The World is Full of Surprises

I don’t see why it is so hard to believe this story for many of my peers who have replied and written on the story above. I think that it is easy to lose a tribe of only 80,000 people. This is such a small population compared to the entire world that it makes complete sense. What I think everyone is missing in the story is that these people are not claiming the Jewish faith but it is a historical find that many people may not be aware of. I think that many people are confused at this story because many people are wondering how there can be a people with Jewish culture that are African. Well, it exists. I have had the opportunity to meet one of these African Jews and their history and culture is unlike anyone I have ever met in my life. I think this story is a reminder that we must remain open to different cultures and people and respect their history.

Race Relations Project : Prom or No Prom: Just Don't Let the Queer Students Dance Together

This story is a huge step back for this community and for the United States of America. Since the 1960s there has been a struggle for the civil rights and basic liberties and rights of each and every human being. Many colleges and universities have made the effort to support people of different sexual orientation. There have been marches, speeches, and protests for the rights of LGBTs and this action by this high school has demeaned and disregarded these rights totally. First, high schools have no right to determine who is allowed to attend a prom. They stated that the attendance of these two lesbian girls would distract from the education of the school, but education is in no way part of the prom process. The prom is a celebration for graduating seniors in high school. It is the dance that allows them to say goodbye to their peers, that gives them one last opportunity to come together as a class and enjoy each other’s company, and serves as a rite of passage as high school students prepare to move on to the next step of their educational life, college and higher learning. It is absurd to think that the school would fall back on such a statement as to why the girls were unable to attend. Second, we now live in a more open and interconnected world that stresses and pushes for equality among all people. These are the basic principles by which the United States was founded and we only now are just beginning to see the true meaning of this creed and of these words. The truth is that we need to realize that there are a number of different people and personalities in the world. We must learn how to live together as a whole and respect one another. I think this action by the school is a deliberate and modern form of discrimination that has no place in our high school and no place in the United States today. It is a shame to think that we have high schools belittling kids and singling kids out from other students of the school. With these girls going to the prom, would not have hurt the school in anyway and would not have brought any harm or distain to the school in the slightest bit. If anything it would have supported the new world and rights of people and shown that the school was progressive and has transcended the old world or the old ways of the United States. This action by the school shows that we have much further to go before everyone is truly accepted in this world. We have come a long way but there is still much more that we need to do in order to make sure all people have equal opportunity and rights.

Race Relations Project : Why Is This Racist? Really...

I think that this is an interesting story because there was a similar story on 60 Minutes that discussed the rarity of American White players in the NBA. This article takes the lack of white players in the League to the next level. The NBA is an extremely competitive professional sport that demands the best athletes and players in the world to perform each and every night. Now I am not saying that Blacks have an advantage in this sport, but basketball is more prevalent in the inner city areas around and across the United States of America. Because of this fact, Blacks play this game more so than many other races in the United States. This constant practice and ball playing may add to the skill level and athleticism that Blacks and Brown people have in the League. I think that it is difficult for white players to compete in the NBA now because one they aren’t constantly around the game and GMs and coaches have realized this difference and have capitalized on those who can play the game at the highest level. On the other hand, Whites from Europe are incredibly successful in the NBA. Again there is a difference in how these white players are introduced to the game. In Europe, there are a number of basketball leagues, schools and resources to fully immerse these white players into the game. As a result, these white players are able to develop a knack for the game where they are able to compete at the highest levels of the game. Players such as Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash have been league MVPs and leading scorers not because they have extra muscles or better genes, but because they have been around a game that they have known for their entire lives. It has become a part of them. These players from Europe are prime examples that the slow White man’s game that is talked about in this article is not true. The game has evolved over the years. It is clear to see the white players and all of Europe and overseas players have developed the routine and procedure to make it and compete in the league. Maybe the White American players should learn from these white players and perfect their game. I think it is a cop out in this article that he makes an argument to create an entire league for whites. I think that this is racist and it is stating that Blacks and Brown people are genetically better than whites in athletic sports. This is just a ridiculous and ignorant statement that is made by “Moose”. Hopefully, in the future we will be able to get pass this and people will mature where they no longer have to make statements such as this.
