You\\\'re totally right about it being Will\\\'s foster father and not his father, though he does refer to him as \\\"my father.\\\" Sean clarifies, \\\"your foster father?\\\" Will says, \\\"yeah.\\\" I think I overstated my point back when I wrote this, being snarky about the \\\"I have to see about a girl\\\" line. To reframe it, I think what I\\\'m getting at is that the screenplay is remarkably deep, more so than it may first appear. Repeated lines like \\\"I have to see about a girl\\\" get all the attention, but there are some remarkable smaller moments, like \\\"someone like you out there...\\\"

I just realized that in the screenplay Will is "absentmindedly playing the memory game SIMON" in this scene, so the first clip here is actually directly based on the original source, not on the finished film. Nice work.

Mark, Your talking point was a good one! The theme of getting out of town (even if it is Boston, which I love calling my current home) in order to grow up, fulfill one's potential, and self-actualize, is one that really resonated with me I think when I first saw GWH back in the 90's. I guess I'd never really thought of it before, but how are we to feel about both these films being all about needing to get out of Boston in order to fulfill one's potential? Good Will Hunting is about leaving one's safe comfort zone, which happens to be Boston. Seriously, though, why are these guys leaving this great town that has screenings of awesome movies at its historic public library??
