Why does society dislike immigrants and why are they portrayed badly? Throughout history every society has disliked or demonized immigrants of their land. The new people of the land or group are always treated worse than the locals because no one really knows them. They are ridiculed and teased for not knowing the culture of the new land they are in or for not assimilating well. Every country has its own culture. For some different group to come in and start to affect the life styles of the local population, would piss off the locals. Imagine everything is fine and you like it the way it is, then people from another country come in and try to take your jobs or occupy your land. People will become angered or annoyed by the presence of the immigrants. Also, many immigrants immigrate to other countries to become better off. No one goes to another country to become worse off. When these immigrants look for work, they look for whatever job they can find especially illegal immigrants. They work for minimum wage or below minimum wage. They also do not collect benefits from paying taxes. The main reason society dislikes immigrants is because when a large group comes and starts to affect the job market in a certain area, their presence becomes noticeable and competition becomes greater. The local work force starts to lose jobs to foreigners and this angers them. Their voices will be heard and others will also agree, causing the portrayal of immigrants as bad. When immigrants start to affect the pockets of the local population, uproar usually happens. Americans believe everybody deserves a piece of the pie, until that share of the pie is being gobbled up by outsiders. America is all about capitalism and competition. Recently both capitalism and competition have negative effects on each other. In terms of capitalism, business owners have been hiring illegal immigrants to increase profit and capital. This has decreased the chances of a medium waged American from getting the job. In terms of competition, the average immigrant works a lot harder for less than your average American. Lower wages and harder workers is very attractive to business owners. This creates a lot of competition to Americans. In today’s world, immigrants do not even need to travel to different countries for work. Outsourcing has caused many Americans to lose their jobs. So in the end, every country dislikes immigrants because they are seen as competition.
Would I actively try to not benefit from nepotism if the situation presented it? If nepotism presented I would definitely try to benefit from it. Everyone else is benefiting from it, so why should I not. If I were to live through life with values and not taking advantage of my networks, I would wind up unsuccessful. Everything is through networking and all about who you know. Hard work is just half of it. Having networks and knowing many people definitely benefits you. It may be wrong to benefit off of nepotism, but it will get you places. It will also make life easier. Being endowed with knowing successful people who can get you places should not be taken granted for. Would you reject someone’s offer for a great chance to become successful or simply reject the offer? Of course most people accept it. Not accepting it would leave you in the dust, while the person who has done less work benefits from his connection. Would I actively try to not benefit from nepotism if the situation presented it? I would not purposely lose the chance to something great because I know it should be obtained from hard work. Sure you would enjoy the success and knowledge that you have gained all that you have by yourself. I am not a slacker, but if a shortcut presented itself and the outcome is the same I would grasp the opportunity. In the end networking is more important than hard work in today’s world. You can work hard and follow the right path, but someone else is bound to get the position you applied for through connections within the company.
The class on the needy penis actually made me more comfortable with myself. The facts that were posted on the projector were really interesting. Facts such as 80 percent of college students have had only 0-1 sex partners within the last year. That to me was very astounding and assuring. Knowing that not everyone around me is having sex like it’s their job made me feel a little better about myself and my sex life. I have more confidence with myself knowing I am not the only one not having sex all the time. It would be nice to be the other 20 percent, but let’s get real. Also knowing when girls say no or reject a male’s request to have sex helps me understand how much more complicated the female body is. That when or if they say no, it does not mean they do not like you. The things they said about how females can just turn off the fire, while it is a lot harder for guys to do that connected many dots for me. From my experiences this is definitely true. Women can lead you on and then all the suddenly, out of know where not want to have sex anymore. After Sam’s wife informed the girls to be careful about doing that to men really, I think was good advice for the females in the room. When males get all riled up and are ready to go, it is like trying to stop a train. Knowing this information and knowing others know this information has made me feel comfortable with my body and my sex life. I think this class also helped many other people out there in the audience who are very frustrated about their lack of sex. This may have helped them cope with the amount or lack of sex they receive. To have a setting where it is alright to speak about the needy penis helped put into light the many male centered thoughts about society. That man is driven by their penis. The male sex drive remains the same throughout the rest of his life, while females sex drive evolve. This helps solve the problem of people in relationships who think that their sex life is getting boring. In fact, it is just evolving into a more verbal setting instead of a sexual setting. Sam sharing his experience with his wife served as great examples, which were a tad bit too much, but ultimately described the needy penis. To wrap it all up, Sam’s closing remarks of the lecture with his wife begging to have sex in the middle of the night was very inspirational. Knowing that she felt the pain of a man’s needy penis and understanding it was great.
The diversity at Penn State is a lot better, compared to other schools. At some universities, the diversity is astoundingly small. The diversity is probably less than one percent in some places. At Penn State I do see a good amount of intermingling, but not a lot compared to some others. It is understandable that diversity is not too large here because Penn State is located in the middle of nowhere. Many international students or people of color live on the east and west coasts; closer to more congested areas such as cities. I know that many Asian families live in cities and the children usually do not stray too far from their parents. This is due to Asian values that when the parents get older, it is up to the children to take care of them. Also, many black college students go to historically black colleges because their parents may have gone there as well. The diversity seems to be getting better. There are a lot businesses catering to the needs of different cultures. The people here at Penn State seem very liberal to the topic of diversity. Everybody seems welcoming and interested in learning about other cultures. One flaw I would like to point out is the segregated and cliquey groups. This can be seen with international students, black fraternity groups, and white groups. People of the same background usually are attracted to each other because it is easier to communicate with each other. The diversity at Penn State is a lot better, compared to other schools. My opinion on poor white society is that it is a shame. Most white people have the advantage to better themselves over the long period of time they were here. I am not saying this goes for all because there have been instances where predominantly white industrial sectors of the economy were damaged by globalization. Take for instance the fall of Detroit’s car industry. It was a thriving industry in the United States, until companies such as Toyota came in and took most of the market share. This left many middle class white people in shambles, which now accounts for most of the bad economy in Detroit. This could be seen through the theory of determinalism; where Toyota’s decision to take the car industry’s market share determined the outcome of the middle white class. Another way to look at it is seeing what past generations have done to affect the decision making of their offspring. In Tammy’s example, her family is part of the poor white class and so were her parents. Tammy also believed her father would be proud of what she has accomplished today. So by looking through determinalism’s glass, her father’s expectations for her were not so different from her grandfather’s expectations for her father. Then again, this can also be seen through the glass of free will. By looking through the glass of free will we could assume that Tammy is lazy and has made decisions that have kept her in this vicious circle of poor white “trashery.” This can also be said for poor white society, that even though they have been endowed with abundant resources, they still remain poor. When I say resources, I mean the advantage of having white skin and living in this country for generations. I think many people in society believe that poor white society is due to laziness, ignorance, and bad decision making. I do not blame them, but there are many examples of people in poor white society who have become successful through hard work and determination. In the end, my opinion of poor white society leans more towards free will where their decision to stay in poor white society is up to how hard they work.
Now to the question, who would I help? Frankly, I would help people of color more often people who are white because I believe if you are white, you get discriminated less. Sam Richard’s presentation on affirmative action really showed how discriminatory job recruiters are. What caught my attention was that white males with criminal records received more call backs than black people who have clean records. By looking at the racially bias facts, not assumptions, that recruiters discriminate leaves me to really question if we are all on the same competitive level.
The way we live in America is so much more privileged than most of us think. Compared to other countries, our lowest income households would be a dream for others in their nation to achieve. Like what Sam said, many people under the poverty line according to their country, live on a dollar per day. Try to think how hard it would be to spend less than or equal to a dollar per day. To your average or even poorest American, that would be a great challenge. The amount of resources we waste in our daily lives and that we take for granted is unfathomable. I know I may be a hypocrite saying we are all wasteful, but it is true. We leave lights on, we let the water run till we get it to a certain temperature, we waste food, and the list can go on and on. Many people in the world do not have half of the materials that your average American has. Our way of living would be unsustainable compared to many countries that are not coming on the rise. Our materialistic needs and way of thinking would be looked down upon or awed by others in their country. To have heat, clean water, and electricity ready on hand is such a luxury. Many people in the poor countries would have to walk miles for their water everyday and many do not even have electricity. I once visited a part of Southeast Asia called, Cambodia. The poverty in that area was eye opening. Some beggars intentionally mangled parts of their limbs so they can get more money from others pity. Beggars ranged in the millions. Many new I was American, so they would approach me and beg me for money. In my mind, I would like to give them money, but if I do more would come. It is truly sad seeing the living conditions of many of these people. Another thing that many countries lack is opportunity. In United States, opportunity is limitless, as long as you work hard for what you want. We do not have any conflicts here which would oppress you from doing other things. We do not have to worry about genocides, war, or getting blown to pieces. The money we pay for taxes is to pay for our convenience. To have people clear the roads of ice and snow, to have people come and pick up your garbage, and to have people deliver your mail is something we take for granted. The amount of services and opportunities our country provides for us is limitless. I can see why people come to America to attain the American dream. Even our poorest seem like a better life than many others in other countries. So next time you complain about not having something, think about what you do have.
Peoples ability or should I say lack of ability to make major decisions so quickly is due to the fact of ignorance and laziness. Frankly who wants to research all the alternatives and hard facts of making a decision right when they are asked? Many people just weigh out the outcome and take the better solution. Many people usually do not know what they want. Our society has caused us all to think a certain way or what is right or wrong. People just want answers right away. It is more efficient, but the quality of the decision is probably poor. Ignorance of a topic leads to bad decisions, but people just want to take it out of the way as fast as possible. Laziness is a big contributing factor of why people make decisions so quickly. Most people do not want to search for the right answer, so they would say yes or no to get the person away from them. This applies to small decision making such as daily decision making. Many people just let others make their decisions for them because they do not know what they want. Many of us cannot make decisions for ourselves because of the lack of knowledge of ourselves. The human mind is a very complex thing. So in the end, the brain chooses the quickest way out of a situation, which usually leads to bad decisions. Many people just follow life where ever it takes them. You would ask them to make a decision and they would be indifferent of the outcome as long as it does not affect them. The laziness and ignorance in our society has caused us to make rash decisions and now we pay for it. An example would be our economy. Voters want change now, but what they do not know is that good change takes a lot longer. You cannot expect Obama to drastically save the economy during his term. He could probably help reduce the deficit, but change can only be seen in the long run. Decisions are very important. Each decision we make change the course of our future, but some people just want the fastest way out. What I mean by the fastest way out is the fastest way out of the question they are answered. Some decision making is just too complicated for people to make. That is why we hire people to make decisions for us. As time goes on and materialism expands, the media will be making our decisions for us. Determinalism will outweigh free-will 99% of the time. Decisions will be based off of what society think is right and how we should conduct ourselves. In the end, we are all dead.
Race being a factor in the future is very questionable. People can create other groups or ways to label other. Personally I believe in the very far future, that race will not pose a problem anymore. People will open their minds and let others come into their lives. It will eventually happen. Everybody will intermingle with each other as the earth becomes smaller and smaller due to the rise in human population. As cities and towns grow, the web of connection will spread all over the globe. Technology will also bring us all together. No longer will distance be a factor in traveling to certain parts of the world. Communication and transportation will become faster and more efficient. With innovation comes more globalization. Websites such as google already have applications that help translate other languages. Technologies like this help reach out to the rest of the world that we never thought we could. The only people left to reach out to are people who live in desolate areas, such as small towns and villages. As cities grow and internationalism spreads, people will come to realize that they have no choice but to talk to interact with other races. It will be nearly impossible for them to thrive in the world, if they do not open themselves to diversity. I think the thought of race will disappear and a new way of labeling people will emerge. Labels on how you dress and who you socialize with will matter. There will always be different groups with different preferences, but the thought of race will not come into light in the future. Only in places like America does race really count. Countries in Europe rarely discriminate against other races. I know of many Russians who are Asian, but when I ask what they are, they reply by saying Russian. They don’t say Chinese-Russian or Korean-Russian, they just say Russian. It is that mentality the rest of the world will come to realize. As capitalism increases, investors and business people will not care of what color you are, but of how much money you have. In the end everyone will probably be the color beige. The European’s views of beauty will no longer matter, and everybody will have the same skin tone. People who are very dark or very light will become the new minority. The subject of race will be left in the history books for historians to study. They will say that race was the root of many conflicts and bloodshed. People will not ask of ethnicity, but they will ask of where you come from. You will not have to worry if you need a tan or not. People will not judge the color of your skin, but rather judge you by your character.
That is the same question many of my friends ask me here at Penn State. Since I am Asian and many of my friends are of different ethnicities they ask how come all the Asians hang out together. For example I would see them together in Davey’s library computer lab or during late night at the HUB. The question could also be asked about why white people only hang out or date amongst other white people. To be frank, I think the white people are the most segregated because the largest groups are usually all white, not so much the international students. I think the reason why many of us hang out with the same ethnicity is due to convenience or fear. Convenience can include the same culture, foods, fashion, and way of thinking. Many people hang out with the same ethnicity because they just understand each other, so the cultural barrier automatically disappears and communication is happens a lot better. Fear can include the fear of not being accepted or understanding the ways of life of another culture. Where I am from, that is inside Philadelphia, many of my friends are Asian and Black. I rarely hang out with other ethnicities in Philadelphia because I did not get a chance to really meet other ethnicities because I went to school with predominantly Black and Asian. On the other hand, at Penn State most of my friends are white because I joined a club where it is predominantly white and basically the entire University is predominantly white. I wanted to do something different and diversify my group of friends because opening yourself to other ethnicities brings many other opportunities and experiences. I think it’s a lot harder for the international students to hang out with the American born students because of the language barrier and because of the culture. To be truthful, the fashion between international students and American students are very different. I noticed that as soon as I same to Penn State. Try to wonder going to an entirely different country to study their language, while focusing on your major. Seems difficult right? You would have to learn their gestures, jokes, style, and basically their entire culture. They have to adapt to this new environment while taking on difficult course work. They also have to set their priorities straight. They have to balance their social life and school work. Of course focusing on their school work is much more important than student life. Many of them are on scholarships or their parents are paying top dollar/yen to send their kids to a tier 1 college in the U.S. such as Penn State. If you ask why we all hang out with the same ethnicities, I challenge you to reach out to another group of students different from your norm.
Absolutely! Knowing that geography and ancestry largely affect the physical aspects of your body, take a great weight off my shoulders. None the less i don't really care what others think about my body because I can't do anything about it or it costs way too much to. People should be proud of what they have. Having specific characteristics create diversity among features within the human race. Life would be boring if everybody had the same desirable characteristics. To look like a product of your parents and carrying the traits from your origin should make you proud. Having different color, facial characteristics, and height differentiate you from other groups. No, group is better than the other, in respect to geographic location. Humans evolve because of living conditions, to survive in their climate and way of life. I once saw a show where your average biker gang/bad ass, who was about six foot and five inches, was challenged to climb some dangerous mountain. He took on the challenge and failed miserably. The two Sherpa who were leading the trip were no more than 5 foot and 5 inches. They climbed the mountain as if it were nothing. The Sherpa were built for the horrible conditions. So for them being stout helped them survive the harsh conditions. Another example I would like to bring up was a point Sam Richards brought up in class about the Asian eyes. The reason for Asians having the slanted eyes is because of a slit on their eyelids, which many of them do not have. This is due to the fact that it helped fend off sand particles from entering their eye because many Asians have lived in desert regions. Another example is that Africans usually always win during sprints in races because of their long legs. Their long legs give them a longer stride. After hearing all this information, my insecurities about my body seemed to start to evaporate. Little by little, did I care about my characteristics. Since I have big nostrils, I used to be a little self-conscious about it. Now that I think of it, I do breathe a lot better during the summer. I used to be embarrassed about how big my lips are until I learned it helps moisturize the air before entering into my lungs. People should not be ashamed of how they look. In fact, people should embrace it and let the whole world see. Who cares if someone says a negative characteristic about you. No one is perfect. Perfection is what you make it out to be. Someone else’s views should not be yours. In the end, body image is now less of an issue because of the fact that it is caused by evolution.
