Why do society hate on immigrants? That is something that I do not think has one reason, in fact I think people have several reasons and they all may be different. I as in immigrant who has lived in the United State for over fifteen years can relate to both sides. I have seen what it is from the outside and in. I think the media plays a big part in why things are the way they are. They cause hysteria against the incoming immigrants. There are bad reports about people committing crimes. Crimes happen everyday but it is a bigger deal when the immigrant is illegal, or just an immigrant in general. They capitalize on that, and act as if it is the fact that he is not from here that causes them to commit a crime. While at the same time thousands of people who were born here commit crimes but there's is not televised throughout the nation. The crime may be the same but just the fact that one was not born here makes them different and more of criminal. I also think it is the fact that people are just scared of change. They do not want someone else coming into the nation and taking away their jobs and having to compete with them for resources. This happened every time a new group of people came into the nation, anywhere from the Italians to the Mexicans coming from across the border. They are working hard and trying to make a better living. I do not see why people complain about such things because if they were not to do the job, no one else would. At the same time these immigrants are having children who later will be the future and will compete for high ranked jobs. People just have fear of what is to come. They are afraid these people will some day take over their nation. In some cases they may be right because the Hispanic in the nation are quickly increasing and the number is getting larger than expected. Soon the Hispanics in the nation will be the majority, and that just frightens people. I think that is why there is hate, because they want to avoid this but I do not think that is possible. There are just too many Hispanics living here that it will happen eventually. Perhaps not when it is predicted because of all the barriers towards Hispanics but the day will come. I was also inspired by the video about the Colombian man in class who strives to help these immigrants. We need to see that stuff in the news, and not about the man who robbed a store and is blown out of proportion because he is not from this country.

The question is why information travels the way it does. It's because people cannot communicate in a proper way. They are too focused in being politically correct and saying the right thing. They do not want to offend anyone and say everything what people want to hear. They say things like black instead of the n word because it is not politically correct. In fact I just did that in this blog, I used the letter n to represent a derragatory term. They do not want to offend anyone and say everything what people want to hear. In the lecture about Haiti, Ernso Jean made the comment where he stated that he did not like people, in particular the media coming and photographing children in poverty. This made me wonder why this might be the case and after thinking and analyzing the situation I can see where he is coming form and agree with stand on this issue. I would not like for someone to come to my country, photograph those who are suffering of hunger and homeless, and then show that to the rest of the world. They turn into objects more than just a regular human being. Of course this may motivate people to donate money or even more money than they would have originally donated. But that is not the kind of people Haitians are, well that is definitely not the vibe that I have received from watching the video and hearing me Ernso Jean speak. They are hard working people who want our assistance but in ways that they can work out themselves sort of speak. They want us to to help them, help themselves. That is why they are going about the entrepreneurship project because they themselves want to create jobs for the rest of their people. They are not asking for someone to come and create jobs for them, they are just asking for some assistance to help them take off. That is another reason why I think Mr. Ernso Jean does not like people coming and taking these photographs of children. I think he wants people to donate and help because it is the right thing and it is what they want rather than just feeling guilt and that being the motivation. It is also might just be a privacy issue, you do not want someone going into your house and photographing your family member when they are suffering, especially your children. Well at least I would not like that because even though I know I need help, I personally would not everyone to feel pity for me. I would want to work out my problem, that may be a reason he made such a comment. He just simply does not want people to go into what he calls home and photograph them in that situation. I do not think it will stop anytime soon because it is what works. We see such images and feel guilty and obligated to do something about these children who are suffering and need our help. I do not think they will discontinue but maybe someone can inform them that they do not like them doing such things, and perhaps a different method will be approached. After all, these organization are designed to try to make this world better and help those who need it the most in it.

The question is about whether or not I feel uncomfortable about people around me speaking a different language. I personally speak another language besides English and use it to my advantage. I am not going to lie to you, there are times when I use Spanish to say things I would not say otherwise. I use it to make side comments on people and usually be funny about stuff that is happening in my surroundings. So when asked if I feel uncomfortable, I have mix feelings on how to answer such question. I do feel uncomfortable because they are most likely talking about me and making side comments on something about me, but then again I can not feel to bad because I do the same thing. It is just one of those things you do not want people doing to you but it is not a big deal when you do it. So I guess it goes off, treat others the same you want to be treated. Therefore I can not really complain. There are many times when it is just easier to communicate in your native language, it might get the message you want out easier or just faster. So do not just figure that when someone is talking in another language they are referencing you, they may just be saying what they need to say in a more efficient way. I do that a lot, it is just easier and make me personally feel more comfortable sometimes in general. I figure this is the same for everyone else, who decides to speak in a different language. Sometimes in alternative language is chosen to say something that you would not say out in public because it is personal. I know situation where people are embarrassed about where they have to go or what they have to do, so they just tell those close to them in a different language. I have a roommate is who is Asian and when he speaks in his native language I do not feel uncomfortable, even though I know he could easily be bashing on me but I do not think that is the case most of the time. It is just easier to talk in his native language because of his recent arrival to the states. Also it easier for them because they do not have to think so much about it, they just do what they have always in a different environment. I, of course do the same thing and talk to people in spanish around him. I usually just talk about other stuff and never bash on him because it is pointless. If I have something to tell him I do it in English and everything gets resolved this way. I have nothing to hide to people like that but it may be in public where it could get uncomfortable.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - Do you think any stage... · 0 replies · +1 points

The video talks about being a humanitarian, and how the person speaking feels about it. They want to reach the stage to better them but are unable to because their first instinct is to help their own people. I think this is very true for people of color because we always feel like we are pushed down upon so our mind set is to help those who you have seen suffer, your own people. I do not believe thinking this way is either good or bad, it is just a stage. Like Sam mentioned it is very difficult for any one person to reach humanitarian stage. Many people believe they have reached this stage but they are just unsure of what that actually is and are probably not fully committed to this stage. They may have some thoughts of a humanitarian but their real mind set is not completely. I think one barrier that is true for most of these people, is that they will always have the instinct to help out their own people before addressing themselves to the problems of others. I have heard many people of color converse and they are always conscious of what their people have gone through, and they’re always looking out for a, “brother”. This right away makes them not humanitarian. Humanitarian is someone who wants to help people as a whole and does not favor one single group of people. I personally cannot say I am humanitarian because of this factor. I want to help people out but I always to help my people or just the people who surround me in general. If offered the chance I would help people from all over the world, but I would make a greater effort when it comes to those who are from the same background that I am from. Not only would I do it because I want to, but also because I feel obligated to help out my people out first. I would first help those who came from the same country as I did. I would then help out the Hispanic community because it is where I reside from. I would then make effort to help the people back from my hometown here in the state. And gradually move up to helping anyone in the Penn State community. At some point I would make it a greater effort to help those who are also a minority, because even though we are all from a different race we have the minority factor in common. This is what makes me not a humanitarian, even though I would like to be. It is the lack of wanting to help out everyone equally, no matter who they are or where they came from. It is hard for me, and hopefully as time advances and the class proceeds, it will take me close to this goal.

Did the diversity fact influence on my decision on coming to Penn State? I think it did to an extent. I remember looking into several schools and always for some reason looking at the statistics of the different races that attended those schools. When I stumbled across I saw that the it was primarily white but it had several races and even though their percentages were small, there were many. When visiting this was something that was capitalized on, the people giving the tour talking about how diverse Penn State was. This of course was a good thing for me, being Hispanic. I have been surrounded by people of all different backgrounds. This idea was of course changed when I came here. Yeah, Penn State does have people from different background, but not to the extent the promote it. I feel that I see a different side to this factor though. I came from a primarily white school, with all my close being white. This changed when I got here, I was immediately brought into the Hispanic community of Penn State. Most of my friends here are Hispanic. That being said I feel like I have more of a connection with other minorities. I see all the minorities sticking together here, in two different way. First, I see people of the same race stick together. All of the Asians hang out with each other, same goes for the black people and Hispanics. The other thing I see is that minorities stick together amongst each other, I feel that I have more of a connection with the black kids around campus and become friends with them easier than someone that is white. Penn State is full of cliques, much more than high school. I felt that everybody hung out with everyone in my high school but here it is different. I have made some good white friends but it is much harder here because everyone is driven to be in a certain clique. I feel that to enrich your Penn State experience it is best to join clubs because here it is where you will meet with people from different backgrounds who want to meet other people from different. They are obviously willing to meet new people, that is why they are in a club and from the start you both have something in common. Something that would not happen easily just around campus, because we do not know what people are interested because we never approach each other to talk. Just for the simple fact that we are different. People need a reason to talk to someone of a different background rather than just because. I think people of the same race decide to stick with each other because they know for sure they can find something in common with that person.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - Where do the messages ... · 0 replies · +1 points

There were several questions asked in the video, the first asking where do we think young children get the message that white skin is good and black skin is bad. It is often said that the first teachers for kids are their parents. So it would make sense to think that, that would be answer. That parents are teaching their kids about the skin colors and whether they can be good or bad. I do not think that is the case though, I do not believe that parents sit their children and tell them that dark skin is bad and white skin is good. Rather I think that it is other out side influences. I also think it has to do with the fact that parents do not even address their skin color. It is something that is unspoken of, so when kids get to school they begin to make their own assumptions and learn from the outside world. The media definitely has an important role in how this is perceived. Kids of course, spend a good amount of time in front of a television where the media can influence them at all times. Most of the cartoons have the main character as being white, so this may be where the good aspect comes from. They main character is always good so they link the together and figure that white means good. Of course you do not see many if any cartoon that have have the main characters. This is different now though, because more people are conscious about such things but before there were none. It was not until last year that Disney came out with their first "princess" that was black. Many children look up to these stories so having a princess being white in all their movies has them link the two together as well. I remember growing up and watching movies where the bad guy was black or of dark skin. It can also be said that the media in news has influence on this, because when we watch we usually see the picture of a dark skin person as responsible for crimes. There are many factors that make up why young kids think a certain way not only the media. There are of course parents who teach their children dislike for other skin colors, and this comes into play in school. They are not aware that saying something about will hurt kids feelings. They go ahead and say till eventually it is carved into both of the children's minds. The one who is saying and the one who is receiving such acts. I think we are getting better at this and trying to make people see that the how dark ones skin does not define beauty. Of course it will not go away next week but over time perhaps.

locations but ended going back to the middle because it was so convenient. I am familiar with this location which also influences why I have not switched spots. I do not think any of the people around me have changed their location for I see the same people in the same seats, class after class. Of course this may have affect in other situations like when going to a place that is unfamiliar. I usually don’t think about where I sit but I’m sure I make an unconscious decision about. I would say I sit beside the person who as well is the safest, like an Asian person, Hispanic, or someone who just has a smile on their face. I think of other factors can come in place like how they are dressed, and even body odor.

going down in the front. So the perfect spot would be in the middle of the middle. Here I have a good general view of the class and of the professor. I can see him when he’s in the front and when he walks around through the aisles without having to twist my neck at all. I do not really think of those who sit around me other than my friends. I sit with the same people from class to class, so it has not changed anything since the lecture. There were days at the beginning of the semester where I tried out different

Asian girl all took the safe spot and sat beside the Asian girl. The black girl decided to sit beside the other girl who was also there; they all have different safe spots. This caused for many different expressions throughout the classroom. People were surprised while many would have the made the same choice. This of course had no affected at all where I sit, but maybe it was because I made that choice early on in the year. I tried to sit in a place where I have the best view of everything. Not in the front because then cannot take notice of the people surrounding me or the back because it is too far from everything that is
