I have a question. I'm currently have a 3gs with newboot ...jailbreaked with spirit at 3.1.3 and unlocked. Suppose Apple releases an updated version that updates baseband and whatnot before comex releases his jailbreak for 4.0. That would leave me and alot of people unable to upgrade to 4.0. Any advise. Can i upgrade to 4.0 so i could backup my shsh and then downgrade back.

I would do a fresh restore. Setup Iphone as NEW. Then re-apply Spirit. RE-Download it with IE.

I believe you have the new bootrom, so you cannot upgrade to 4.0 at the moment, since the tools release above don't support it (yet). As of right now, you can STAY on the 3.1.3 and then Jailbreak with Spirit, then unlock with Ultrasn0w. (Google the guides for how to do this). Once all that is done, Google how to save your SHSH. This will allow you to downgrade back to 3.1.3 in case you accidently upgraded to 4.0 or for some other reason you need to go back.

Spirit will allow you to jailbreak and then unlock with ultrasn0w while on 3.1.3 I'd wait a bit though. Cause you never know what clauses there will be if they release something soon.

in the same boot as this guy. Please answer. am i correct in thinking that anything with "MC" in the model number is the new "bootrom" And since we're on 3.1.3 and never jailbroken ..can we upgrade to 4.0, jailbreak and then unlock ?

You need to get out of recovery mode. Restore a fresh 3.1.3, activate with official sim, then run Spirit ..then unlock with ultrasn0w.. In order to restore, you need to have your shsh saved on cydia and have your gs.apple.com pointed to cydia.

if you're factory unlocked, then you don't have to worry about baseband. You should be able to upgrade and downgrade without a prob once you have your shsh backed up.
