I have the same setup. Out of contract locked to AT&T iPhone 3GS, FW 05.16.02 and Version 4.3.5 (8L1). So what can I do to unlock this phone? Do I need to change to a different baseband? How do I do that? Do I need to upgrade it using iTunes to iOS 5 and then downgrade it? It seems there must be some way to unlock these phones???? Please help

It would help for someone to do a step 1, step 2..... like angiepangie did a couples of weeks back. If you are the one doing that now rather than her, that is okay by me. Where can i can a 1. 2. 3. ??? Not all of on here are as tech savvy on this kind of thing as the others. Many people on here seem to be like me, fairly tech savvy in general, but need clear instructions on how to use these tools for our situation because we do not want to mess up by just trying things.

I have an iPhone 2G currently locked to AT&T (I am now beyond the two year agreement) and it is on firmware 3.0.1 I want to sell my iPhone and buy a new 3Gs. This blog says: "If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. AND Phone 2G (1st Generation) Use PwnageTool to do the magic and then restore with iTunes using your newly created .ipsw ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything, the baseband will be unlocked, the phone jailbroken." Question: Should I first update in iTunes to v. 3.1 and then use the Pwange 3.1 to unlock my 1st. gen 2G iPhone? OR leave it at 3.0.1 and do the Pwange Thang and then do the update. I don't want to get this wrong and what i quoted does not clearly say which.

I had no trouble with the Official bit torrent link. Have you tried that one? I then used Transmission v.1.75 to get the torrent. worked fine.

Okay, to be make sure... I am overseas now and so no ATT store around for thousands of miles. I do not want it jailbroken, just unlocked. Can I do this with redsn0w? I can do it in this order? 1. Upgrade in iTunes 9.0 to iPhone ipsw 3.1 2. Then Rune Pwange or redsn0w to unlock the phone?

I have an iPhone 2G currently locked to AT&T (I am now beyond the two year agreement) and it is on firmware 3.0.1 I want to sell my iPhone and buy a new 3Gs. I do not care about having it jailbroken to use cydia or any apps other than the apps from the Apple app store. I simply need to have it unlocked so that it can use a different SIM. Can I upgrade my 2G iPhone to 3.1 and then unlock the phone using the Pwang tool or redsn0w?

FIve of us in our family currently share our purchased media from iTunes by having authorized each other to play our content. So we have copies of the media from each other that we want and then are allowed to play them. I was concerned that perhaps the new "Home Sharing" feature in iTunes 9.0 might require the computers to physically be in the same house and on the same network in order for shared media to work on our machines. ,,,that if we are traveling then the media we have already authorized might not work since we were not physically in the same location on the same network. But maybe I am worrying for nothing and so can safely update my iTunes to 9.0 and not compromise already shared media and nor the ability for me to unlock my iPhone 2G in November when i sell it and buy a new one.

Thanks.. here is a question you might be able to answer... regarding iTunes 9. Currently I have music shared with 5 of my family members. In iTunes 9 will the songs we shared still work on each others computers and iPhones when one of us is traveling out of the country?

Hey Angie... you are helpful as always! Here is a question similar to #1 but different... Q: Can I update to iTunes 9.0? A: It won't affect already jailbroken devices. Enjoy :D I want to unlock my iPhone in November to sell it and then buy a new one. My question: Q: Can I update iTunes 9.0 now but NOT update the iPhone software, leaving it at 3.0.1, and still be able to unlock it in November using the redsn0w 0.8 that I used to unlock our other one in August?

Yes! Redsn0w worked on unlocking and jailbreaking my 2G iPhone that is now no longer under the two year contract. Now I can sell it to get a new one.... but how do we get content on it? Do I set it up as a new iPhone? Can I put music, photos and apps on it? Please help.....

Thanks Confucious... I don't want to use ultra since I have an original 2G iPhone. Can you just be unlocked, use sing a different SIM and use the normal OS 3.0 springboard apps?

I appreciate your input.... another question... my main objective is to have the iPhone be used as it is but unlocked so another SIM can be used. Do you have to have it jailbroken if all you want is to be able to use a different SIM? Or perhaps there is another compelling reason to also jailbreak.

Okay, I ran redsn0w 0.7.2 everything seemed to be working. It was unlocked and the other sim worked. I ran into a problem when I attempted to open icy. When I did that icy seemed to be doing something like transferring files or something from one place to another. I interrupted it. I tried to open the contact list to delete contacts and it crashed. I tried several times and it crashed. After a while the Apple logo came on with the circle thing. It did that for a bit then went black and then the Apple logo and the spin, etc. I could not reset the iPhone or anything. What is happening? Any suggestions? I then did a restore from iTunes, but of course it now says there is an unsupported SIM. So what do I do now? Do I have to have icy installed? Do I need to have Cydia installed?

Thanks angiepangie! Then I will go ahead and try to do this tomorrow. By the way... why does the devteam offer only the 0.7.2 rather than the 0.8 that some people refer to? should I avoid the 0.8 version????

Greetings! We are getting a new iPhone. We have an Original iPhone 2G and want to sell it. I need to unlock the carrier so it can be used overseas in a country where the iPhone will never ever officially come. Can I use redsn0w 0.7.2 to unlock this phone? Does it also have to be jail broken? Do i just follow the instructions and go through the whole process? I read there is a redsn0w 0.8 should I try to use that instead? AND should I have in the SIM from the other country while I do this? Please help.
