$7 Popcorn : A Life in Movies Blogathon

I agree with what you're saying 100%, Fletch. Trainspotting has done nothing to be deserving of being in that sentence.

$7 Popcorn : You are tearing me apart, Lisa!

There was a guy sitting in front of my friends who was getting VERY upset with the crowd. I think he came in expecting to really sit and watch a movie while everyone else was there to drink and yell at the screen. He probably came away disappointed.

If it's playing in a theater near you, go. It's worth sitting through again just for that experience. After we saw the movie, we went to our favorite karaoke bar downtown, since it was only half a mile away. While there, someone announced that it was their friend Lisa's birthday. This lead to me, very loudly, shouting 'You are tearing me apart, Lisa!'. I never though I'd use a phrase like that outside of the theater. As for Plan 9, yeah, The Room is much worse. Have you SEEN Death Bed: The Bed That Eats though? It's a tough call between it and The Room.

$7 Popcorn : So...that was Centurion

I did see The Descent 2. In fact, I traded reviews on it with 1416andcounting.com! http://www.7dollarpopcorn.com/2010/06/1570-descen... Is the one that Caitlin wrote and http://1416andcounting.com/?p=2356#content is the one I wrote. There was also a follow up here: http://www.7dollarpopcorn.com/2010/06/end-of-desc... Frankly, I really enjoyed the second one. I thought it was just what a sequel should be, a little more over the top, while still maintaining what made the first one great. I was never crazy about the ending, but you can't win em all as they say.

$7 Popcorn : Remaking The Thin Man

It's not a lack of creativity, at least I don't think. There's so much money at stake in a major motion picture that the studios do tend to try to play it safe. And that's fine. And it's possible that a movie can be remade well. For example, many people (myself included) consider the 1941's The Maltese Falcon to be a great movie, but it was a remake of a film done in 1931 (later re-edited and re-released in 1936). John Carpenter's The Thing was a remake of The Thing from Another World.

The restrictions I placed weren't completely arbitrary. I went with American actors mostly because the characters are American. The age ranges I chose were based on the ages of Powell and Loy when the played the roles.

$7 Popcorn : The end of The Descent & The Descent 2

I think it does have it's own merits. Obviously it lifts a lot from the original by design. It sets up a much larger cave system, and it establishes that others know about the caves and what's inside. Could it stand alone? No. Not a chance, but it's not designed to. It's built to continue from the first and bridge into the upcoming third. I think it's hard to judge this one until the third one is completed.

I don't think my personal enjoyment of D2 was because of my fond memories of the first. I remember watching and enjoying the first, but it's been years since I watched it and had to actually pop it in to remember how it ended. I honestly enjoyed this movie on it's own merits (minus the last 2 minutes). A movie sequel is generally going to be what you enjoyed about the original, but upping the ante. This did that. Maybe too well. It WAS very much like the first. I, apparently, didn't mind that as much as you.
