I have always heard that people in Europe pay a large portion of their salaries as taxes. From what you write, it appears that people pay into taxes, which are then returned to them as salary. Do I have that right?

Hey, upland, someone had to graduate last in the class.

Seriously - some doctors are great, some are lousy, just like in every profession.

Karen -- sorry about your flu shot problem, sometimes that happens, irrespective of the doctor. The CDC write-up - http://www.cdc.gov/FLU/about/qa/flushot.htm - hope this is short lived. If you're taking any other meds (scrip or OTC) make sure your doc knows about it. ALL of them, vitamins and supplements included. I'm assuming you're not allergic to eggs. Hope you feel better soon!

This isn't a correction due to an error I made of something I knew, I actually did not know this. I'll correct the post -- Thanks!

You are, of course, correct. Post has been fixed. THANKS.

Karen Anne -- while I share your disdain for war, the reality is that if we had no military, someone else would. One of the fundamental premises of any government is the ability to protect its citizenry and its own sovereignty.

I have very mixed feelings personally about a draft -- but there is something compelling about Rangel's argument that if more "rich kids" were forced to serve, there would be further wars. I'm not sure he's right, and I wrestle with the concept. So, I'm not sure about the draft, but I do (sadly, reluctantly) know that we need a military.

In certain ways, it's all a "paper vs plastic" discussion -- the correct answer is "I've brought my own reusable canvass bag."

Whenever I see something on trash or recycling, I'm always reminded that my grandparents all reported that when they were born, there WAS NO garbage.

As for the costs -- if it becomes so expensive in terms of fixed costs for recyclers to pick up and disseminate, I don't see how they can do it. While I believe in recycling and minimized packaging, etc, I don't know if I'd pay to have my recycling picked up if it cost twice what the trash hauling did. I'm not sure, but I thought about it after I saw the USA Today piece.

Thanks Karen Anne -- perhaps that's what Tasia meant. I agree with you, it appears that gaming is unlikely except in the scenario you presented.

Tasia -- I have never heard of the "Federal Transit Voucher Program". I Googled it, but didn't find anything. Could it have a different formal name? Do you have a link to the program itself? THANKS!
