Steve Lundeberg : Lundy: We call it the VC

This one made me laugh out loud while sitting at my desk in my very quiet office environment... My heritage is German and, while serving in our armed forces, I lived in Germany for just under three years. Keep this in mind: in the German alphabet, the letter W is pronounced "vay" and the letter C is pronounced "say." German was my first language, so I tend to still comingle particular parts of each of the primary languages I use. Now, in Europe, the lavatory is commonly called the "water closet" and, as history would have it, many water closets are marked with "WC." This is the "Vay-Say" and when I saw the letters VC in reference to your "pot," I simply could not control my hysterics! Had to excuse myself to the (ahem) ladies room! Thanks for the boost this morning! I needed it!

Steve Lundeberg : Lundy: Web reaches Linn County

As a non-native Oregonian who has lived all over the world and has chosen to plant roots here for my family, I have to say that I prefer that any time I spend on the western side is limited to passing through on my way to the coast. My experience with the Corvallis level of snobbery has far surpassed even the upturned noses of Parisians, Venicians, Bavarians and Egyptians - all well known for their condescension of Americans - and I am completely content with keeping to my side of the turf. I only hope that my Beaver-believing son is not influenced or subjected to it in his lifetime. Or better yet, that he does not choose to join those masses! Oh, and I also have internet; not only in my home and workplace, but also on my cell phone. Technology. Go Figure. Hmph.

Jennifer Moody : Moody: No money where my purse is

This post reminds of my perception on the whole "recession." Now, don't get me wrong - I am well aware of the layoffs and unemployment rates that abound. I am not talking jobs, here. That which I speak of is relative to the too long lines at the drive thrus, the over-crowding in the parking lot of the mall and other such retail establishments that do not count as groceries and all the brand new cars parked outside of the homes of those provided by supplements from HUD. Granted, we are consumers, but do we really need to consume every little thing we see? I sometimes view our current society members as little pac-men - eating up all that we can just to escape the ghosts... hm... could it be that we are ALL attempting to replace our real fears with something less-than-fulfilling? Makes you think, doesn't it? As a single mom with three jobs, in school full-time and living in a 792 sq ft home, I just don't get it!!! Makes me say, "Grrr."

Turning on the television during that one free moment I have to just vegetate and find that the only movie playing on every channel is.... "Groundhog Day" Don't get me wrong, I love the movie and the idea behind it, but it would be a vicious loop of irony to find it on every channel - at a different point in the movie's time per channel - and absolutely nothing else. Break out the "Psycho" musical score!!

Jennifer Moody : Moody: The 5-cent critic on "Wild Things"

I have not seen the movie. My eight year old Thinking Child saw it with his father and called me upon exiting the theatre to tell me he saw it. I asked if he liked it. Yes. I asked if it was just like the book. No. Well, some. The beginning. Not so much the middle. The end was just like the book. I asked if he would like to see it again with Mom. Oh, yeah. You're gonna love it, Mom!! So, there it is. I'll let you know when I know more. :0)

Just in case you were curious... The Bakugan Starter Kit still waits on the entryway table for just one week of acceptable behavior. We're getting closer! Maybe he'll get it for Christmas! :0)

I value my family and friends and work hard to instill in my child the importance of a traditional moral standard in spite of the non-traditional trend of today's society. It is just my belief. Poor choices have consequences. When I make a poor choice (and I do that more than I care to admit), I suffer a consequence. I want my child (among other people, but I am not raising them) to learn that lesson. It is my goal to be an excellent parent and this is the work I do to attempt that achievement. I'm just sayin'. I will now step down from my soap box. Thank you for providing this venue for me to vent my feelings on the topic! Have a spectacular day! ~M

That was September 25th. Each week since then, we have discussed what kinds of behaviors and actions do deserve such a reward and during that discussion, my child is made aware that he has this week (each week) to demonstrate these behaviors in order to earn the Kit. Thus far, the Kit is still sitting on the entryway table in our home as a reminder to him that he has the opportunity to make good choices and be rewarded for them. It also reminds him that when he makes poor choices, he gets nothing more than what he already has and he must learn to make the best of it. I did not learn this type of parenting from my mom or dad. It is not legal to parent in the way I was raised, though I believe it was effective for the time. And I didn't grow up to be a criminal or a dead-beat loser.

The Kit was bought impulsively as a surprise while shopping for a friend's birthday gift. It was on sale and it was something he had been requesting for some time. I knew it would mean something to him that I thought of it. Lo and behold however, when he discovered that the birthday gift was bought for his friend and he got nothing (during the shopping trip, I hid the Kit from him - I'm sneaky like that), he instantly regressed to age three and began pouting as though it was HIS birthday and everyone forgot. There were hands thrust into pants pockets, lower lip stuck out so far that I was sure he would trip on it eventually, foot dragging and even an occasional toe kick to the ground. Now, this is going to seem cruel, but I did it to prove a point to him regarding how tolerant I am of this particular type of behavior because even after eight years of life with me as his mom, he is evidently unaware. I got to the car in the parking lot just before he did and I placed the Kit in his seat. When he got in, I told him to hand it back to me because his behavior did not warrant a reward. Instant tears.

I am not perfect - by any stretch of the imagination. I do not claim perfection. In fact, I prefer excellence to perfection because it is attainable in my mind. I strive to be an excellent parent. I do not always hit that mark, but one of the things in which I take pride is my adherence to consistency and follow-through. When I tell my eight-year-old son that he will not get the Bakugan Starter Kit that I purchased for him until he can show me with some consistency (Yes, I do expect what I respect) over a period of time that his behavior deserves such a reward, then he will not get it until he is able to demonstrate the desired result.
