From a business perspective, hiring illegal immigrants is a very risky deal. Hiring illegal immigrants (especially a chain) could potentially kill your business. I.E. if you found out that American eagle in California was hiring illegal immigrants paying them one dollar an hour and making them work 14 hour days, then your (majority of the population) perception on that business would be very negative, at least I know mine would. Now there are also legal troubles and other risks involved but for a whole chain to go down would be worse. Now although illegal immigrants are cheaper to pay does that make it ethically all right? Personally, I think it is wrong in two ways. One is you are worsening our economy, by paying illegal immigrants part of the money is not being put back into our economy, it is being sent to the illegal immigrants house in their country. Two paying someone less than minimum wage is illegal and it is not fair for the work they are doing to only being paid like a few bucks per hour. For a human being to work sixteen hours and not get paid correctly, means they only get to live off like a few dollars a day, making it hard for everything. In our economy/ societies today it is almost impossible to live off one or two minimum wage jobs per family. Other thing about hiring illegal immigrants is its unethical. Having both illegal immigrants and regular United States Employees, does not make sense obviously you can afford citizens so why just hire like a few illegal immigrants, it does not make sense to me, why risk it to get the biscuit, when you can do things the legal way and have no risks. Now for a large amount of business owners in the United States money is a problem and the majority of the population does not just have money to throw away, this is the reason that illegal immigrants get jobs, is due to the large amount of money a business man saves if he doesn’t get caught and is able to carry out the illegalness of the whole scheme. Illegal immigrants take away from the United States economy due to the whole reason they are here. Large corporations in the United States use Chinese and other countries supplies (Chinese sweatshops) are kind of the same idea labor wise at least. Although it does somewhat harm our economy, by using other people from other countries to get our materials it is not as bad then having the illegal immigrants, take straight away from our economy. If everyone in the United States were to work for below minimum wage how would our economy look???
The telephone game was a custom at both my elementary school and church school I went to on weekends. There are several reasons that the telephone game fails. First is you are whispering and it may not be clear to the person you are telling. Second, depending on the group of people playing the game people change it on purpose to be “funny.” Now besides both of them not everyone hearing is the same and may interpret words differently so say you say two left feet, someone may think you said two left on the street. Yeah that is a bad example but things like that could occur, no questions asked. Now since the telephone game usually fails, people may not believe stories such as Native American stories, which were almost all, passed down through word of mouth, or the bible, which was written decades later. This goes to show how some people do not believe. Now personally I don’t see the problem if I were to play the game in a serous business setting because everyone would want it to be perfect to impress people. Now if I were to play it in Sam’s Soc 119 class it would be extremely different because there are immature people and people who would change it regardless, since there would be no penalty. Now if Sam said this is worth half your grade and each section had to get it right I am pretty sure that people would try there hardest to get every word right in the sentence. Now usually when one plays telephone it is a sentence not a whole story like people “think” the bible/ Native American stories are. This I believe is why there is uncertainty by people to take these things as facts especially since people may take things literal or word for word true. Also in class the whole story with the African American getting discriminated on by race ended up just having a little scuffle. Now the story may have been destroyed during the middle but I know people saw the several white looking people at the end (who knows for sure there white) and thought oh! They could have watered it down to make themselves look better, when in all seriousness it possibly could have happened, but the likelihood of it occurring is not all that likely.
So basically what I am saying is, that telephone has been around for a long time and now, during the days we live it fails but no one knows for sure about back then. With the whole when a white person told the story it was not as bad when a person of color told it, I do not agree and think it was just people messing around etc….
Personally, I believe that no mans life should be sacrificed in order to do order. Now, there are circumstances where this is needed, but not as much as it is instilled today. My reasoning behind that 29 to 1 is wrong is basically would you want your family to be apart of that 29? I know I would not want that all. Again with the “what if’s” but if you were in Iraq or Afghanistan with your family and you happened to get killed by your own soldiers, how would someone feel towards that. If my friend’s family died like that I sure as hell know I would not be happy with American soldiers, or the American government. Now to counter that argument, if a “bad guy” was known to kill many people (even there own) then I can see where they’re coming from. If they are known to kill 100 people a day and there is an instance where 29 people would die to kill the Bad guy then in that circumstance I can see using that ratio would be good but personally I do not think that it is always like that. There are several videos that I saw of American soldiers abusing their power. From running of a taxi mans car or sexually abusing and assaulting women from there. Its wrong and that is very bad publicity, having bad PR is not good. Coming from a group, if you have bad PR, it is not good at all for your future at all it just creates more problems in the future. And another thing to rebuttal that is what about the families and people on the planes and other things during September 11th, how can you tell their families that oh were just going to let someone go because 29 people are going to die, they would just say how many people dies during the twin towers incident on September 11th incident? Exactly. It is all a touchy subject because people may fell one way and many other feel another way, there really is no in between with this.
Also with Oil and other things, aka the reason all these wars are occurring, it is stupid, but I do not think there is anything there is that we can do to stop it, and time will just tell and we shall see.
So basically what I am saying is that I do not think killing 29 innocent civilians (possibly people from your own country) to kill 1 person is right, however under certain circumstances it is needed and understand people point of views on it. Also that there is no way to stop these wars occurring, the only answer is time and time will tell.
The thing is, I as a white male do see how white people are “afraid” to date black girls. I personally do not care what ethnicity/ race my companion is; however I know some people relatives do. I know my great grandparents are from the era where people did not date people of color; it just was not heard of. Now though it is, and even though people’s relatives are not racist, they are just not accustomed to people dating out of race. Some people’s relatives do not even want them to date out of religion, ethnicity, etc…. I know a friend who is just not attracted to black people in a relationship sense, and physical as well. He may have his own reasons but why does it matter if one dates a black girl or a white girl? Dating someone out of race shouldn’t be bad or unheard of. I feel some people feel as though white people say they will never date a black girl and I say who cares? Why does it matter so much? There are no reasons. This goes hand in hand with people hanging out with their same social/ ethnic/ race groups. I feel some people may just be afraid to break the barrier, due to how the media, government portrays that specific incident. Fifty to sixty years ago dating people of a different race would not have happened, but today I feel some people make their mind up before meeting people. I have dated a black girl and a white girl and there was no difference based on race. However the way people reacted when I said “SHE” is my girlfriend did, and I got mad not at the person that did the reaction, but just in general. If a white man says I am dating a black girl, why should it matter? Having this in society I feel is why people may not want to date out of their race. It is more accepted for people if other people in their family have done so. (i.e. if my mom and dad were different races it would be easier and more accepted if I did.)
Based on the perception of interracial dating, if you asked a group of 1000 3rd graders, 1000 8th graders, 1000 undergraduates in college, 1000 parents, and 1000 grand parents do they feel interracial dating should be allowed or is accepted. You would get a wide skew set of data. There is reasoning for each persons answer. The 3rd graders would most likely say no. 8th graders would say yes college and some parents would say yes and some parents and grandparents would say no way. And the grandparents would feel strongly about that due to the era when they were dating. There ignorant to the situations of today’s society and there honestly is to way to fix that except with time.
The diversity at Penn State versus other universities I could have attended, I feel is higher. Although the statistics do not seem to show, but I feel Penn State is a very diverse university. Everywhere I go here I see a wide variety of races. From Asian, Black, Hispanic, etc…. I feel the diverse groups of people at Penn State make the saying “We Are ALL Penn State” true. There are other colleges that are predominantly one race, however Penn State, is not which is a reason I fell in love with Penn State. The statistics saying Penn State is predominantly white is correct. However, I think that they should take statistics for campus life. There are a lot of cultures that make up the on campus life and I feel they should be expressed and showed so people see where they will be living and see the other cultures they are going to be seeing and learning other ways then there own. With the diversity in out campus life, more people from other groups will come to make it more diverse. I would love to be able to meet new friends of other races that would be sweet to be able to go out to eat with someone who is/ or ancestors were from another country! I am astonished to how easily accessible that is at Penn State University Park. With constant diversity I believe becomes success because not every work place is going to be with people just like you. Take “The Office” for example there are several races (although predominantly white) but they all work together (sometimes not well, but you get the point). I feel Penn State will keep will constantly be growing race wise and hopefully become more diverse because diversity is amazing and without it people would not know how to deal with situations after college.
The other universities I could have went to, were not all just white. Some had only 2 races that I saw when I visited and they were either Asian or Black/ African American. My high school was not very diverse we had Blacks and whites with a few Asians in the mix. My high school was predominantly black (not by much.) Coming from a school with barley any diversity to one with many races, and cultures was a shock and I am very happy that I was able to experience this, and the experiences that I will make in the future. I joined a fraternity this year and the amount of differences between our brothers (only 41) is a lot. We have brothers from Australia and China, Native Americans, Irish, Jewish, etc… and with all the different cultures, ethnicities and race it makes us who we are and we can bond over those characteristics.
As a white male, should I feel guilt? I personally do but so should every American citizen, not just white males. The type of economy, freed slaves live in is horrid compared to our economy in the United States. A few reasons I feel guilty are: 1. Is that most of the slaves do not have a choice to live the way they live, 2. Many try to become better within their family and financially but due to their economy it is impossible, 3. As an upper-middle class family, I have more than a portion of the United States and the people below me are above the people in slave countries. Knowing these facts makes it hard to see my problems as bad. Yeah I may have 5 tests in one day or work for 6 hours then 5 hours of classes straight, but there are always people in the world worse off than me. Personally I know my family is where they are because of the hard work done by them. I am second generation American (Grandparents were born in Ireland and Parents born in the United States) and it was very hard at first for my family to start off here. My dad joined the Air Force because he saw it as a way to help his country and a way to have a job and become successful. One thing that irks me is how African Americans who have this stereotype feeling towards whites. My mother traces our ancestry (genealogy) and she has traced it pretty far back. Irish immigrants were worse off than African slaves yet when people think slaves they think of African slaves. This is one misconception people have today. So I guess in a way I do not feel that guilty because my ancestors more than likely were slaves and my family came back from it.
There really is no way of me making a significant difference for the freed slaves. Now if several hundred people make a small contribution then something could get done. There are several options that can be made to create some help for freed slaves. That’s why I feel the project we are doing in our recitations is very cool and helpful. Us doing this shows good initiative by the whole class. There are different things we can do and I think the whole thing Sam is doing with Haiti relief is amazing and shows a lot for his character. I personally would like to help in any way I can. I cannot wait till we learn more about this project and we can meet people involved within this great type of work by not only Sam, all the people involved in making this such a great opportunity for Haitian’s.
I personally believe that in society today people as a whole have started to become more racist towards Muslims. The reason I think this is because of the war on terrorism. I feel people categorize the whole thing, as every Muslim person when in fact is was not. I however do not think that racism towards blacks or African Americans is gone. I think there is just a tad bit more racism towards Muslims. There are a lot of different aspects that go into the category racism. There is direct racism and discrete racism. Direct racism would be to directly call someone a derogatory word or be physically or verbally abusive towards them based on their race. Discrete racism is when you will not sit next to a Muslim or black person. Or you could just talk amongst a group of your friends about a specific person saying things “behind there back.” I personally think that there is a lot more discrete racism in our society today. A lot of people are afraid to say something or just feel safe saying stuff without the specific person knowing. Another reason I feel they do this is because society and the government have made everything have to be politically correct. Who cares!!?!?!?!? Is my thing, why should anyone be worried about what people have to say and think. There is no reason for people to become so emotional or to fight or kill someone over dumb stuff like calling someone black instead of African American. The whole idea of politically correctness I think it complete and udder bullshit. I feel most people have enough self-respect that they will not go around calling people by derogatory terms. I know for a fact most people do but not everyone. This is why we have the reason for political correctness because people have no self- respect. Now for the whole, who is society more racist towards? I now feel that they are racist towards anyone who is not like them. There is a song from a musical Avenue Q called “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist” and I believe this is true and have yet to be proved wrong. I want someone to prove me wrong and prove to me who they are not a little bit racist, even if it is toward your own race. I feel we spend too much time worrying about what he/ she said that we waste time, when we can use that time to better our economy or state or city or self- being. The reasoning people have behind being hardcore racist is also sickening. “I am racist because everyone in my family is…” why? Just because people around you believe in something does not mean you cannot break away and start your own views/ points etc…
onally believe that certain success is by personal achievement. For example I have two friends Shawn and Kevin. Shawn lived with his dad and step mom (which he hated) who in my area would be considered lower middle class, and Kevin lived with his mom and step dad who with his step dads income were considered upper class. Now Shawn knew early he was going to have to get a job and other things to be able to do what he wanted in live, while Kevin decided to just go to school and not worry about a job for the time being. My friend Shawn is not an assistant manager at Chic- Fil- A and my friend Kevin is unemployed. Now what I am getting at here is Kevin attends a community college after transferring there from a state college in Wisconsin. He constantly complains that he does not have a job but does not attempt as hard as he can to get one.
I always tell my friends when they complain is that remember there is always someone worse off than you, there are people all over the world that have less than you. Sam showed us Thursday that the poorest ten percent of the United States is better off than eighty percent of the rest of the world. Hearing these facts makes me astonished because, sometimes I complain about how bad I’m off and how hard my life is when my life really is not hard at all. The next time I say that I need to think off all the Haitians who are far worse than me. Times may be tough at times but there always worse for at least one other person in the world.
Today we dance for kids with pediatric cancer. Now I know I am better off than every kid we are doing this for because they can die at any moment, their cancer can become worse at any second, and yet again as selfish Americans we always say “FML” or my life sucks when it does not at all. Now I may be generalizing but for the vast majority of the United States population myself included were selfish. Going along with the Cocoa slaves in the Ivory Coast. Those people are slaves anywhere from age 10 till 80 yet we still buy cocoa at the cheap price. Personally I would rather spend 2 dollars on a candy bar than 1 dollar as long as it is “Fair Trade” chocolate. I know I can not speak for the majority but there is no way that people are going to atop eating chocolate after seeing that video, its impossible. However, one can attempt to buy fair trade chocolate. As a broke college student I understand you need to buy the cheap stuff, but just think if those slaves, think how much there working for no pay. Technically when we buy the goods, now after seeing that video we are helping the slave owners. Just saying!
I fell that saying all the silence is worse than all the silence is one hundred percent true. If one does not stick up for what they believe in and talk about their feelings and stand up and say “I don not understand why you are doing this?” than no wonder why war is occurring. I personally believe many wars can/ could be avoided if people just speak up and talk. A quote from the song “with words that I should have said” I believe if people will break from their shell and not worry about what society will say then our country may be better. This song by Lupe Fiasco I believe describes exactly what people are afraid to do. One thing my parent always told me is that the do not vote because if our president was not good they would not have vote for him and thus not taking responsibility. However, if they do not vote I feel they should not complain about the actions. They never put their input in so why should they be allowed to complain. I personally will vote for that reason. Although this does not just song I believe does not just represent war and voting. I think it is deeper than that, with your personal feelings also. I know a guy who does not want to be in a relationship with this girl but doesn’t want to break it off because she will be hurt. This is another example of the song. He will complain to me about how he does not want to be with her but she thinks there relationship is perfect. “Fear is such a weak emotion that’s why I despise it. We scared of almost everything, afraid to even tell the truth.” I feel this quote of the song is what every human believes but is too afraid to break this. I have never heard this song to now and I already bought it while writing this response because I agree completely and do not think that it can be said any more clearly. I feel if everyone would just listen to the song or even just read the lyrics they will agree that this song is deep no matter if they are pro war 100%. No matter what we do there will always be war no matter what, there is no way of changing this. People are so caught up in all this reality television they cannot see past the fakeness of the shows and act like every Jersey Shore character. This also depicts our society by being followers and not original. Not speaking your own words, being scared of our own self. This I feel is everyone’s number one weakness or flaw.
The reason I believe people associate themselves by their ancestry while in there own country (Me calling myself Irish in America but American in Ireland) is because everyone around them is from the same country and they are used to seeing “people from this ancestry.” I call myself Irish when people ask, but when I visit Ireland I say I am American. The reason I do this is because most people will assume I am American because I live in the United States of America, but my grandparents were all born in Ireland. I think that when people ask the question they should be more specific. Like ask “Where do you trace yourself back to?” If people would ask this then it would be clearer and there would be no reason for this confusion. I think time also plays a factor. If I seen someone where I would talk to them for a short period of time I would be more interested in where they are from not where they trace there heritage. Now if I knew someone for a long time and already knew they were from the United States of America or Ireland etc… then I would want to know where they trace there heritage to or where they think they are from. Some people do not know this and assume their Italian because the have the Italian “look.” Again with finding out if people are living in another country then where they trace their roots comes conversation. If I were to live in India and am Irish and lived in the United States my whole life people would want to know why I am now living in India. This also goes for people who are from China, Japan, and Venezuela etc… and come to the United States. People want to know why they moved here. One question that I have is when there in America they say their Irish, Italian, Polish, African, etc… but when we go other places we say were American is this because we think being American is better or people will think higher or lower? I honestly do not think people consider themselves American when in other countries because people will think higher of them, but that depends on the country. There are many people that think Americans are overweight lazy people but that’s there assumption. Another question is once you live in America are you American forever are you braded with that title of being American? If so do people want this title? Do they think having this title will make people think different of them? Personally I do not think it matters because we are all human beings and it really does not matter what they think because there single opinion does not really matter .
