When I was still awake, I saw the scene where Rose was contemplating suicide by diving into the Atlantic. Jack as hero, was weak. As she decides she must jump, he says, femininely, "...no you won't - take my hand" "if you let go, I have to jump in after you" - he starts unlacing his left shoe -then to Rose: "I'm kinda hoping you'll come back over the rail and get me off the hook here." What a weak character, and person! Would Bogie have let a writer or director put those pitiful words in his mouth? I was groaning. That's when the movie lost me - early on. Bogie would have handled that scene something like this, after he argued the writer and director into it.: Working his way closer, trying to catch Rose off-guard, "Sharks" Rose: "Wha.?" Jack: "When I was in the merchant service, I've seen sharks in these waters. You ever see how a shark rips a man to pieces...a piece at a time? ,,,and the blood. They smell it. Then the others come." etc. He catches her off guard, bitch-slaps her, yanks her off the rail and pulls her close in a smothering embrace. Face to face, he compliments her softly, and, as she gasps, he clamps his moist lips onto hers, as she melts willingly. Bad writing, bad directing, bad acting. Cartoonish throughout (except for when I was unconscious). The rest of the actors you've pegged pretty well. I've never been able to watch Clooney, or much of Hanks. Hanks seems miscast in anything he does. I never knew that anyone thought Murray was a great actor, so I don't know why he was included. An actor of his limited possibilities needs to have a movie written around him. I rate Nicholson a little higher than you, however, and I disagree about Tracy. His solo performance in "The Old Man and the Sea" showed that he had all the gifts and tools. He just did too many movies with the annoying Hepburn.
